A couple of cold mornings at Montauk Point

A couple of cold mornings at Montauk Point - 02/25/05 07:16 AM

I've been on a mission to get "just the right pic" of Mantauk for a local law firm & have spent the winter aggrivated that my schedule & the good weather were never in sync. A few weeks ago, I was able to make 3 early morning runs in 9 days & hopefully they'll find 1 in this batch that they like. Here's a sample of the first 2 runs. These were done on a Mamiya RZ67 Medium format since the resulting print needs to be about 6ft long.
I have always found that cold weather makes for crisp pix. Considering the temp was around zero on the first day, I think that held true eek
Needless to say I was wearing just about all the clothes I owned! lol

I second the "great work" motion. It looks like you had a picture perfect day, other than the low temps. Great work!

Nancy, I'd be interested to know how the background Montauk LH comes out in the larger picture(especially in the first shot).
I've been up many early mornings in the same spots but not in 0 temperatures. I hope the foam of the water wasn't nipping at you toes?
Great views and I always love the use of active water to enhance the shots. Very Nice!

Thanks for all the comments. The first pic was the first & coldest day. The weather man lied to me...the clouds didn't clear until late morning, but I certainly wasn't going to leave without any pics after a 90 minute drive wink

Those cloudy days is when I've always run into noise in the skies when shooting digital, which is another reason I picked up the medium format cam. I wanted to ensure a 6ft pic with a smooth look & no speckles.

Here is a crop at 100% of the sky in an original digital pic from that morning.

If you zoom at 300% & higher you can begin to see the slightly diff colored pixels, but this is much smoother than any warm day pic I've taken in the same conditions. The med format pics shouldn't have that at all smile

When I get my new scanner, I'll scan in the med format negs & run a sky comparison & show what the Lighthouse looks like bigger.

I had some 10x12 prints made up, but not of any of that day or of that far off yet.

And yes, I did get wet to mid calf a few times trying to get further out onto rock so I'd have water in the front of the shots, but my boots & 5 layers of clothes kept me dry wink

You can see more of these 2 days Here

And here are some Black & white shots from day 3.

This was my first try at real B&W film. I think I like it better than converting digital, although the film & developing costs, and not beig able to see the pics instantly is taking some getting used to ...lol

Hi Nancy! Welcome to the Collector Forums and for posting your beautiful images! What kind of film/slides did you shoot for these? The color looks natural and not too overly saturated, but still nicely done for the overcast conditions you were shooting in. I dabble in MF with a couple old classic cameras and scan my negs in with an Epson 3200 flatbed. What kind are you using?

Keep on posting photos! I love to see new images from places I've never been. laugh

Your pics came out great. I just came back from California. The weather killed me. Washed out pictures. Mother Nature Doesn't like me.

I really like your third picture. Getting low to the surf really worked well, and created a nice leading line to the lighthouse.
