Hereford Inlet Light Station

Hereford Inlet Light Station - 06/21/04 06:22 AM

Drove down to North Wildwood, NJ today to visit Hereford Inlet Light. It's the first opportunity I've had to see it since the exterior was repainted in what is reportedly the original color scheme. We also toured the keepers' quarters/museum, but since cameras aren't permitted inside, I only took a few exterior shots.

Super pics, Bruce! Thanks for sharing! How come no cameras are allowed inside?

Bob,

The explanation I've gotten is that flash photography can damage some of the old photos and paintings inside. they find it easier to ban all cameras because people in the past have disregarded the requests to not use a flash.

I've also heard people state that the real reason is so the can sell books with photos of the interior.

It's an unusual restriction, but it's their Lighthouse and they can set the rules. The people there are very nice and otherwise very accomadating.

The gardens outside are also worth going to the Lighthouse in and of themselves. It's my wife Esther's favorite Lightouse in part because of the garden.

Dennis, I have to agree on that garden, it is fantastic, pictures can't really do it justice as it has many levels and layers of depth and height to capture it as it is in person.

This lighthouse reminds me a lot of Point Fermin in California. I love Victorian structures, so when they make a lighthouse out of one, it's even better. Nice photos!

The color of this lighthouse doesn't seem quite as bright as it did in the first photos that were posted of it after it's repainting. Maybe that was the plan? To have it more muted as time goes by?

Thanks for posting these! smile

Sue, as far as those colors go, thoses pictures were taken around midday (by the shadows) and the sides of the lighthouse are not lit up in the best of light

You're probably right about that Mark. The previous photos I was thinking of were on another site. You can see them here for comparison:

Of course cameras and such can make a difference too.
