Lights of a different kind

This past Thursday night/ Friday morning, as I was driving south to Indianapolis I stopped to stretch my legs along I-65 north of Lafayette, IN. as I got out I looked to the north and thought to myself there's no city in that direction to light up the night sky, I watched for about 5 minutes before I was sure it was the northern lights, as all I could see was pale green light, but it kept getting lighter and dimmer so I knew it was the real thing. Fortunately I had one of my cameras with me, a tripod and some Kodak Max 400. I spent the next 45 minutes (3:15am to 4:00am) taking a whole roll of pictures. Almost all the pictures look very similar in color so I am only posting 2 of them. Part of the reason I couldn't belive it was an aurora at first was because I was so far south. The pictures are taken looking north over and across I-65 at exit 188 (about 15 miles north of Lafayette, IN.) the bridge is under construction and you can see some of that in the pictures. Also I didn't even notice that the big dipper is right in the middle of the aurora until I was cleaning up the images.

Wow, I didn't think the aurora was visible that far south either. It's lucky you had the camera with you.

Nice pictures. I have lived in MI for 12 years and have never seen the northern lights. Maybe one day.

Mark, I've heard you can see them pretty far south- I've never seen them, however. What a great opportunity!
