Bud vs. Michigan weather 2- The Saga continues - 03/21/02 06:21 AM

Thanks, Terry- I started this because the other thread was way too long. Slides came back today, just finished sorting them. I have a backside shot of Gary hugging the catwalk. All things considered, the slides aren't too bad. Nothing spectacular, but didn't really expect that. I'm going to get a few put on a CD and see if I can't figure out how to post these things. I'm light years behind in this computer stuff, my wife just showed me how to get on this thing a few months ago. No doubt I'm gonna need some help.

Re: Bud vs. Michigan weather 2- The Saga continues - 03/21/02 06:51 AM

Well, Bud, after my initial 4 tries and misses, Gary had given me the "missing" link -- which was that when I had the photos resized and uploaded to www.webphotos.com, had clicked on the photo I wanted to post to enlarge it, right-clicked on it to get the menu to come up with "Properties" at the bottom, highlighted the URL address with the mouse, I should then hold down the "Ctrl and C" and the URL would be copied, hit ok on the menu, minimize the webphotos site but don't close it out, then go to Harbour Lights to the thread where I wanted to post it. Type in your commentary and then where you want to put your photo, type

When you submit it, the photo will come up.

When you go to webphotos, it's easy to follow the directions to register. As far as resizing your photos for posting, you would do that in your photo editing software program - whatever it may be. Open the photo you want to post which needs to be resized. In one of the pulldown menus (most likely EDIT), there will be a function called "Resize"; choose that. When it's open, you will see a selection for pixel size, choose that and change whatever figure is there to 72.000 and enter. Then go to where the photo dimensions are -- sometimes it's right over where the pixel size was. If it's a horizontal photo, change whatever dimension is showing to 500. If it's a vertical photo, then change the vertical dimension to 500. The software should automatically change the other dimension. When you go to save it as a jpg, compress it to a 150,000k or less. Then just upload the resized photo to webphotos. If you need any further help, e-mail me: 1of3trees@prodigy.net and I'll be glad to help you. I've certainly posted enough photos here by now that I should be able to help you without too much of a problem.

For my 100th post I'll try to get fancy(somewhat) Many thanks to Terry Forrest for coaching me through this learning process, and for John's input as well. This is a shot of Gary hoping to "catch some waves" that we both did soon thereafter.

You're very welcome, Bud. Looks like Gary is almost dancing away from the waves! Nice perspective photo of this lighthouse. Gary and I shot this one together in December under entirely different weather conditions (a little cold, that's all)!

Looking forward to seeing some more!

Re: Bud vs. Michigan weather 2- The Saga continues - 03/25/02 01:41 AM

Congrats on the 100th post, Bud!

Not hardly dancing, Terry! I had one leg wrapped around the catwalk after one particuilarly big waves swept the pier totally soaking me from nearly the waste down in a wall of water/spray. I had no desire to go for a swim in the 34 degree water of the lake that day! Bert was about right, this is being prepared to hang on for dear life! There are some photos on the first Bud vs. Michigan Weather thread that give you a pretty good idea of what some of those waves were like when they came across the pier! Here's one shot repeated from the other thread to give you an idea of what it was like. Too bad you weren't shooting when this one came across the pier at me, Bud! Or were you???

That's right, Gary. I forgot you said you had hooked your leg around it!

I didn't get any of the waves chasing you,Gary. I really ran out of slide film right after you left to reload, and finished off the prints on my point&shoot. Of course there was no reloading on the pier! By the time you got back, I had the tough decision to make to go get the car warmed up while you shot your last roll!

This isn't very good, I call it"Front Window" as we were shooting thru Gary's windshield in the rain.

I'd like to post some decent ones, but I can't seem to be able to upload to webphotos right now

Wonderful pictures Bud and Gary! I was wondering how you managed to keep from being swept away. The shot of Gary holding on says it all!

Bud - never apologize for your photography. We're all amateurs and learning our craft. Some are a bit farther along the road, but no one has anything they need to apologize for.

Thanks for the encouragement, John. Photography with me is like golfing, always challenged to go out and do better the next time. Some days it works, some days it just isn't meant to be!
Bud ( thats probably why I gave up golf!)

Bud, your photos are fine. I see no problem with them. The one from out of the window I feel is good, especially considering it's from inside the car, shooting through a window! Besides, you got an Honorable Mention in the photo contest!

What's Photo Pro? Never heard of it. The problem's probably with webphotos, seeing as your photos are missing right now and I know they were there before.

OK Terry, maybe it wasn't "Photo Pro" I'll find out. Thanks for the email, I'm sure I need a program, but this computer is strung out. an update is in the works. By the way, what kind of Canon do you have?

Re: Bud vs. Michigan weather 2- The Saga continues - 03/29/02 02:48 PM

Webphotos posted a note that as of 4:37 AM today EST, they still had some server configuration issues to resolve but that all albums were intact. Until they're full back on line, any photos on here that are URL'd to webphotos won't be visible.

I linked the large photo taken at Grand Haven when I shot there with Bud to my gallery on ShutterCity. Given that it's loading properly, that confirms that the problem is with webphotos, which should be resolved when they've back on line normally. There were online yesterday afternoon when I visited this forum, so it's only a matter of time and their msg suggested that they'd be back up fully later today.

Hope this helps...

Gary

Re: Bud vs. Michigan weather 2- The Saga continues - 03/30/02 06:15 PM

Bud: I have two Canon bodies: a Canon Rebel G EOS that I bought in 1997 that came with a 35-80mm lens, and a Canon Rebel G 2000 which I bought last August when I thought that something was wrong with my 1st one. Where Dan and I were going to Michigan in Sept. to meet Gary and among other things, photograph with him, I wanted to make absolutely sure that I'd have a working camera. I wound up that everything was fine with my 1st one; my problem that had got me worried was that I had used wrong exposures on the butterfly photos that I took when we met a group of photographers at The Butterfly Place in Massachusetts! Did you also want to know what lenses and filters I have? Just let me know!

just curious on the cameras, Terry. I'm still looking at equipment, I may be narrowed down to the Nikon N80 or the Canon ELAN 7. Thus my curiosity.

Re: Bud vs. Michigan weather 2- The Saga continues - 04/01/02 04:52 AM

Choosing between Nikon and Canon is kinda like getting married because if you change your mind later, divorce can be expensive. Each brand has its own ergonomics which you'll hopefully get used to over time - and it will be hard to change once you do. Moreover you're likely to buy some lenses - and if you buy quality, there is an investment that won't go with you if you switch brands later. A camera body is one thing, but its the accesories and lenses you'll also want to consider.

If your dealer rents equipment, try renting each for a couple weeks if he'll let you apply the rental towards purchase. Not an easy decision - both are good cameras. Good luck w/ your choice.

An alternative to renting, Bud, would be to find someone who owns the ones you're interested in and will let you borrow the camera(s) briefly. I was very lucky to have a good friend at work who let me borrow his Canon for 2 weeks before I bought mine.

What happened to all the pictures? No matter what I do none of the pictures attached to any of the posts appear. All I get are boxes with an X.

Hi Hank, ... Same thing here, just little x's. That usually means either the code for the pic is not correct or the storage area for the pic is no longer functioning as it should.

Maybe it will be fixed after they read your post and this one.
