New Butterfly Exhibit - 03/11/08 08:29 PM

A new live butterfly exhibit opened at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. Here are a few of the better pictures I took.

The one above liked to sit still for several minutes at a time. It also has one of the larger wingspans.

This butterfly also has a five to six inch wingspan and a very long body.

Some butterflies were quite active, but I couldn't catch them "on the wing". Others would sit still for some time. Others hid in the shadows and were difficult to see and photograph.

I too enjoy photographing butterflies.

Butterflies & Blooms at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle re-opens May 23, 2008 and is a very popular seasonal exhibit housing butterfly species native to North America and the colorful plants and shrubs they use. Here are a couple pictures taken in 2006.

Our trip back east last summer took us to view Faulkners Island Lighthouse in Connecticut. It was very foggy and while you could make out the lighthouse approximately 3.5 miles offshore, photos were not very good. Instead I focused in on the butterfly and flowers at the point where we were standing.
