St. Joe, MI Under Ice

St. Joe, MI Under Ice - 03/08/03 09:12 AM

These shots are from a couple weeks ago when I took a afternoon trip to St. Joe to hopefully catch some sunset color with the ice on the light. Well, the sky clouded up more than I had hoped, but I managed to come away with some good shots. I was mostly pleased that I didn't fall on my butt or slide off the side of the pier.

Not much description needed, I hope you enjoy them.

And from the front...

Nices pics, Mike! They make me feel cold just looking at them. It makes you wonder if winter will ever end.

Mike I like both of these shots but especially the first, the way the catwalk leads the eye diagonally to the light. The bluish overall light gives and eerie sense of isolation and cold that is wonderfully appropriate to the scene.

Mike, these are neat! When we were there a few weeks ago I didn't walk out on that pier, it was before noon and bright sun. We walked out on the South pier.

Great pictures!! You should submit them to Lighthouse Digest.

Fantastic!

Great composition, too, Mike.

For those out shooting and thinking of Lighthouse Digest, keep in mind most magazines prefer vertical shots for covers.

'Cover yourself' by taking both horizontal and vertical images when you've got an outstanding shot opportunity such as this one.

Also, zoom back a bit so the subject is a bit smaller with some 'air' around it. This enables a magazine to add their teaser text items around the outside of the image without covering up any of the key subject matter.

Film is the 'cheapest' part of photography. Getting to the location at the right moment is probably priceless.

If you are shooting digital, remember to shoot some images at the highest resolution your camera will take.

Wow! You sure went the extra mile to get those to share with us in such frigid weather Mike. Thanks to you, Gary and others for braving the elements to capture these types of shots for us, as well as the sunrise, sunset images.

I don't do cold and I don't do early mornings either! wink

John makes an excellent point about shooting images if you think they may potential for a cover on LH Digest, the LH Depot catalog oranywhere else for that matter. Here's my shot that went to LH Digest, as submitted on the left, and after they got done adding graphics to it on the right. They cropped some from the top, obviously to meet their format/size requirements. I left space across the top into which their graphics could be inserted without impinging on the image of the St Joe's north pier lights.

Hope that this helps some of you some. Sorry about the color mismatch on the cover shot. I'm not sure where the color cast is coming from but it appears to be occurring when I import the PDF file that I got from Kathleen Finnegan at LH Digest into Photoshop. Something else for me to work on!

Too bad they have to put that bar code on the front cover. Also my address label usually gets stuck on the front too but not always. frown
