UK Lighthouses

OK ... you asked for it... I shall post a few of the UK lighthouse pictures I have taken ...

Starting with local lights. Burnham on Sea is about 10 Miles south of here. There are two lights in line. The High Light is in private hands and you can only see it either from the "land side" from the road or from the beach, where the other light stands.

And another light which is a little "different". This on is on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. It is called "Egypt Point", but I am not sure why.

That Egypt Point is one strange looking lighthouse. I wondered how they got to the top. It seems that there have been some changes?

You have great lights. So unusual I want to get on a plane and come to see them. I checked out your web. The one in Denmark with the dunes, what a shame

Egypt Point had the access ladders removed, because the hooligans would climb up and do damage. The light is right on the promenade.

Portishead is a town about 10 miles north of here on the Bristol Channel. This lighthouse is locally known as "Battery Point" even though the official name is "Portishead Point"
The first picture shows the light some four years ago. At the time, the local port authority who own the light, were discussing its removal. It was in need of a lot of renovation.



After protests from the local population the authority relented and refurbished the light! It now continues to guide the shipping into the harbour at Avonmouth.



The shipping by the way is mostly car transports! About 75% of all imported cars apparently come into the UK via Avonmouth.

Lighthouse Duo - Portishead Point

Amazing what a little bit of scraping and painting can do to improve the looks. Appears they also added a bell to Battery Point.

Some of these must have fairly small optics installed in them. They are deffinitely different that what we are used to seeing. Your Burnham range lights function just as they would here. Line up the stripes and/or light and you are good to go. Is the high light (rear range) still active even though in private ownership? Looks like the front light might often be surrounded by water?
