Hudson River Lighthouses

Anybody know if Harbour Lights has plans to produce Stony Point or Rockland Lake? Those two are the only ones missing from the eight lights on the Hudson River now that Rondout Creek has been introduced. As to Rockland Lake, I'm referring to the "tilted" one that's gone, not the skeletal light. I think they would make a pretty and varied collection.

Well, Sandy, you've done the right thing and taken the first in posting your request in the "Wish List" forum. Now we need a few more people to jump in and request the same lights.

Harbour Lights listens! A perfect example was MTNHKR's request for Bullocks Light. This light was destroyed in the hurricane of 1938 and all that is left is a "rock pile", the granite blocks of its old base. It's only about a five-minute boat ride from my marina. I never even saw a picture of it and until Bert (MTNHKR) brought it up. Bingo! It's now a great looking HL! Great choice, Bert!

I agree with both of you. These would make some fine lights for HL to make and it would complete the Hudson River series. What a great idea Sandy.

I have included the pictures that are on the Lighthouse Database from lighthouse Depot. Rockland definitely has a list in that picture.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Stony Point and Rockland Lake. I don't have any of the Husdon Lights, but I would like to see a complete collection so that one day, I may be able to have all eight of them in a curio.

Tickled to see I'm not alone!!
We recently took a day trip to photograph Jeffrey's Hook, Tarrytown, and Stony Point. Got some great pics of each for my photo album, and I got some pretty sore leg muscles (Stan's a golfer and keeps his legs in shape walking 18 holes). The hikes to see Jeffrey's Hook and Stony Point are definitely not for the those of us that don't get plenty of exercise. Well worth the climbs, but wished I'd taken along the Ben-Gay!!

I could probably get there OK. With the Ben-Gay, of course. But on the way back, I’d undoubtedly require a couple of muscular guys with a stretcher.

I would love to add Stony Point and Rockland Lake to my Hudson River Harbour Lights collection.

Wanting to know more about Coxsackie Lighthouse I went looking for information but didn't find too much. Lighthouse Digest has a little in its files. Also found another interesting picture on the NOAA photo library .

Info on some lighthouses is hard to come by. Here is what I have on the Coxsackie Lighthouse.

The Coxsackie Lighthouse was established in 1830 and discontinued in 1939. It was replaced by a skeleton tower and then torn down. In 1890 a post light was erected about a half mile down river with the keeper being responsible for it. One day in 1923, Keeper McDougal was attending to the post light when it gave way, throwing him into the cold waters of the river. Fortunately for him, he was spotted by the captain of a Standard Oil tugboat clinging to the bow of his skiff and thus rescued from a certain death. The same ice jam which had caused damage to the Stuyvesant Lighthouse in 1902 also took its toll on the Coxsackie Light, taking out its north wall, some foundation stones and washing away the station's outhouses. Repairs were completed by that summer.

The lighthouse was located on Rattlesnake Island just north of Coxsackie.

That's a fine looking lighthouse. From the looks of the picture, HL could capture the whole of Rattlesnake Island when it is done. I believe that they could capture it just as it looks in the picture. Just enough trees to add to a beautiful lighthouse and the outbuildings.

Just took a look at the pictures of the Coxsackie Lighthouse. I believe that you are correct, Bert. The whole Rattlesnake Island could be included in the sculpture. The end product would be beautiful.

I'm envisioning it being like Crossover Island. It has the same island size and layout for it to be possible. I'd love to see it!
