Texas Lighthouses

Texas Lighthouses - 04/16/00 05:28 AM

I am a newbie from Texas - Just a short note to advise there are 8 lighthouses still standing along the Texas Coast: Port Isabel Lighthouse, Aransas Pass Light, Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse, Matagorda Lighthouse, Galveston Jetty Lighthouse, Bolivar Point Light, Sabine Pass Lighthouse and the Sabine Bank Lighthouse. Harbour Lights has honored two lights to date - Bolivar Light and Port Isabel Lighthouse. Wishing to see additional Texas Lighthouses in the future.

Welcome Aboard, Jimmy ! Texas is one of the few LH states where I've never seen any of their lighthouses. Now that I have some family living down there I hope to get a chance to see some of'em before the end of the year!!

HOWDY Jimmie!!!!!

I'm from just north of the Dallas area.

Anyway, for those of you who make it down to the Houston/Galveston area... I highly recommend you go to the east end of Galveston Island and take the FREE 20 minute ferry ride to the other side of the channel and go see the Pt. Bolivar Lighthouse. It's a fun boat ride and a neat lighthouse on a very nice beach setting.... and it looks JUST LIKE the HL GLOW edition with the raised buildings.

I'm not sure if I found out about this here or in Lighthouse Digest, but if you have not seen the January 2000 issue of Texas Highways you should. They have a great story on the Texas LHs. Very informative and comes with great pictures and touring information. If you are interested in obtaining a copy send a request to this address ckosel@dot.state.tx.us The issue in question is the January 2000 issue of Texas highways.

FWIW, I did e-mail the above and rcvd the following answer:
Quote:
You can purchase a copy of the January 2000 issue by calling Lupe Valdez at 512/486-5823 to pay with a credit card or you can mail a check to Texas Highways, ATTN Cynthia Kosel, PO Box 141009, Austin TX 78714. The amount for 1 copy is $7.50 ($5.00 for the magazine and $2.50 shipping/handling).

OK, those who have seen the article - is it worth the $7.50, or is the info in it available somewhere in a book or web site?

Whelan and Dave speak the truth about the January 2000 issue of Texas Highways magazine. I am a subscriber. A great article about the remaining lighthouses on the Texas gulfcoast.

The Texas Maritime Museum is located in Rockport, Texas - lots of good info about lighthouses and lightships present and past.

Re: Texas Lighthouses - 04/19/00 05:47 AM

I have it in my hands right now and I would say it is worth it. It has some beautiful photos starting with Pt. Bolivar at sunrise(or sunset? not sure) on the cover. The article is 10 pages (9" x 11") long and is about 65% text & 35% photos. It has separate sections on 8 different lighthouses and a "when..where..how" section on how to get there & view them.

It's a small magazine (57 pages with a newstand price of $3.50) but it is defenitely a rare & quality article on Texas Lighthouses. IMHO

I agree with JULB. It's worth it for the lighthouse coverage.

The article on Judge Roy Bean "The Law West of the Pecos" and the one on the Light Crust Doughboys are interesting, too.

My brother just sent me a copy of the January issue of "Texas Highways" that you'all are referring to.....very nicely done! I never realized just how beautiful the Aransas Pass Light really is until I saw it in this publication. 'Beautiful brickwork!! I just received the edition, today....better late than never

The electronic version has the bare bones of the story, but without the rest of it, and in particular, the pictures, the story is missing something. I'm not sure that the article has any new information about any one thing, but I am sure that it pulls together enough information along with excellent photographs, etc that you almost feel that you were there. It gives you just about all the info needed to make a great expedition to the Texas Lighthouses. And the rest of the magizine is no slouch either. there are other great articles. Buy it you'll like it, if not send all complaints to me and I'll deal with them in the most appropriate manner. Dennis
