More "Then" and "Now's"?

More "Then" and "Now's"? - 11/17/98 03:02 PM

The idea of the Morris Island "Then" and "Now" was truly a breakthrough idea. After watching the Lighthouse series on PBS I thought there could be many more possibilities. What really sparked my interest was the dramatic transformation of Round Island in MI. I couldn't believe what it looked like before the restoration and how it appears now. I don't know how others feel about the "Then" and "Now" concept, but what an interesting series it would make. Most non-collectors that look at my collection are all drawn to the Morris Island pieces and love to hear the story behind it. Could there be possibilities for such a series.

Great idea! Colorful Sapelo Island (see current issue of Lighthouse Digest) might make a great sculpture.

I also would like to see more 'then' and 'now' pieces.
It would be wonderful if this concept were used
in a series where one was added on a yearly basis like the
Christmas piece.

If you want a really dramatic transformation, how 'bout a Then and Now of Round Island in MS. ;->

I'm not familiar with this story, could you let me know more about it? The Round Island in MI is somewhat of a local Lighthouse for me, one that I have seen often. I was glad to see such a nice segment on it on the Lighthouse Show, clearly showing how it has been saved from certain destruction and returned to its original beauty.

Wow! What a terrible yet interesting story. Thanks so much for the link. Makes me want to go and hit my assistant who's name happens to be "George".

Thankyou so much for the photos of Round Island, MS. What a sad story to read that just as this beautiful coastal sentinal was about to be rescued the forces of nature had other plans for her. A "then & Now" piece made by HL I think would be most appropriate.

Well, after a year or so, Round Island, MS has joined the 'Now and Then' subset of HLs.

Doing some web surfing I came across another light that I think would make a nice addition to the line. A bonus is that it could be tied into the opening and support of the new National Lighthouse Museum in NYC.

Apparently the Romer Shoal light, on the approach to New York harbor, was originally assembled at the site of the NLM on Staten Island. This link http://www.lighthousemuseum.org/fall99.htm#romer has pictures and a little history.

I picture 'Then' with a building, a pier and a sailing vessel tied up. 'Now' surrounded by water with a more modern boat nearby.

Whatcha think?

Add New Point Comfort in Matthews County, Va. to the list. Fit in really nice with just released Old Point Comfort. Has a Morris Island story but more protected in the Chesapeake Bay. Keepers house has gone.

I checked out the NLM site Rick and I think your idea of a then and now of Roamer Shoal is a good one.

Another idea for then and now is to make the three sisters of Nauset and then the present day Nauset in the wooded area where it was moved two years ago.

Of course, when you think of Nauset you also think of the fact that the present day Nauset use to be one of the twin lights of Chatham. Maybe a then and now of Chatham. The "Then" could have the twin towers and be located nearer to the water and the "Now" would be across the street with one tower. This would give HL a chance to correct the roofline also.

More "then and nows" would be great! I just got back from California and saw Ano Nuevo Island lighthouse from shore. It used to be a beautiful victorian house, with a short skeleton tower on the high point of the island.b IN 1948 it was abandoned and replaced with an automated bouy just off the Island. Elephant seals have overrun the house. I got a great postcard showing the current state. Would be a very interesting piece. It shows what can happen if preservationist don't step in to save the lights that we are loosing to decay.

Hey Mombo, ... I was just thinking of you a few minutes ago. I was just pulling out of my HL dealer when I saw the Massachusetts vanity plate MOMBO on a Subaru Outback. Have any cousins in Massachusetts? LOL!

I agree Sue. Great Link.

But Dale, ...some preservationists are stepping in to save the seals. After all, it was theirs first???????

Should anyone travel the Eureka area, the Table Bluff light is now located at the Woodley Island Marina at Eureka.

No cousins in Ma, Bob. Just my daughter and husband. They're devoted but not thatdevoted!

Table Bluff, you want Table Bluff? Just go to the same link as that for Ano Nuevo and scroll down a little further and it's there.

(There are two photos for each of these lights. So that's why I didn't link to the individual lights.)

It's great to see the before and after of some of these lights like Sapelo and and Cape Florida. I would like to see HL continue on with some more before and afters.

For whatever its worth....I think that the "before & after" series would be a great one. Whatdaya say, Bill?

Great site Mombo! Thanks for posting it. You get a good feel for the station at Ano Nuevo Island but you don't get a good look at the keepers house. It was a beautiful victorian with a lot of gingerbread. It was gorgous!

I should be able to handle that in the next few days John. The tower section is all that's left of it. I'll snap some photos by the weekend.

Cape Romain, SC would be a great addition to the Then and Now series. The old tower, minus a lantern room, proudly stands beside the newer tower.
