Extremes - 11/21/04 04:23 PM
Not sure if this is really a "game", but it's fun and this is the best place for it.
What are your extreme lights? The most northerly, southerly, easterly, and westerly ones you have seen? What about the tallest? The shortest? Whatever you can think of...the only requirement is the N/S/E/W, and then you can do whatever you want.
Mine:
NORTH: Annisquam Light, Rockport, MA
SOUTH: St. Simon's Island Light, St. Simons Island, GA
EAST: I think it's Chatham, MA, but not sure if Nauset or Highland are more east.
WEST: Barcelona Light, Westfield, NY
Other stuff:
Tallest: Cape Hatteras
Shortest: I think it's Derby Wharf, MA
Oldest: Sandy Hook
I'll edit this post if I can think of more later.

South: Key West, FL
East: Montauk Point, NY
West: Cape May, NJ (not very west!)
Tallest: Fire Island, NY
Shortest: I'm not sure, but my guess would be Owls Head, ME
Oldest: Montauk Point, NY

The four corners of mainland US lighthousing:
NorthEast: West Quoddy
SouthEast: Key West
SouthWest: Point Loma
Northwest: Cape Flattery (aka Tatoosh Island)
Tallest: Cape Hatteras
Shortest: Probably the remains of the Cedar Point MD Light, which was the lantern room on display at NAS Pax River.
Oldest: Sandy Hook
Longest?: Navasink
Most Towers at one location: Three Sisters

NORTH: West Quoddy, Maine
SOUTH: Key West Florida
EAST: Nauset Light, MA (Seems more to the East than Chatham)
WEST: MOrgan Point, CT
(This is disgusting. I've got to see more Ct. Lights.)
Other stuff:
Tallest: Boon Island, ME
Shortest: Mussel Bed Shoals, RI ( the only thing left is the base that the light used to sit on.) Shortest is ruins don't count is Derby Wharf, MA
Oldest: Boston Harbor, MA

Bert,
Bad news is that West Quoddy is actually the most eastern light in the US, so it covers two of your "extremities" (man can that statement be taken out of context!)

Taking my atlas out of hiding (I bought my dad the same one for Christmas because they were cheap at WalMart, and I don't want him to see mine and decide to buy one on his own), it seems that while the center of the town of Chatham is more easterly than the town of Eastham, the exact locations of the lights places Nauset as the more eastern light.

You are absolutely right Dave. It may take a week or two for me to
stop laughing about your comment. Using that criteria, Key west would also be further west than Morgan Point, by a long shot. Oh well, all done in fun.

South - Miraflores, Panama Canal, Panama
West - Kilauea, Kauai, Hawaii
