Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/18/05 12:46 AM

While you are considering the above toughies...

Here's #11

Hints
#1: Perhaps jousters would be at home here.
#2: Lighthouse 101
#3: Peaceful
#4: In 1935, keepers witnessed the crash of the U.S.S. Macon offshore. This ship FELL FROM THE SKY!

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/18/05 04:11 PM

Here is probably a totally off the wall guess:

Is #9 Cold Spring Harbor, NY?
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/18/05 04:22 PM

Nope, Diane.

Are my clues too 'off-the-wall'?? confused <- not a hint

E=MC2 Theory of __________? It's a hint to the name. A bit oblique, but a hint.

I've added hints to all the outstanding stairways.

Now when you guess, people, if you can also explain the clues, you'll earn extra credit. eek

Remember, one guess per person per day. Don't guess two at a time. But if your first try at a lighthouse is incorrect, you can guess at another one the same day.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/18/05 05:49 PM

#10 - Navesink

Clues -

I thought this was going to be easy. Is it a challenge?
Navesink is part of the NJ Lighthouse Challenge

Maybe they used Retsyn to build this one.
???

The start of the end for Winslow Lewis.
Fresnel lenses replaced Lewis' argand lamps. Navesink was the first lighthouse in the US to be fitted with a Fresnel lens.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/18/05 06:38 PM

You got it, Diane!! You're in the Stairway Super Bowl. No more guesses on the other lighthouses!

Correct on the two clues. The other referred to the old jingle for Certs with Retsyn: "Two, Two, Two mints in one." Two towers in one lighthouse.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/18/05 11:11 PM

#7 Umpqua River Lighthouse...?

Quote:
Hints:
Climb the tower and things will look rosie.
Look down from above and see Coasties cozy.
Some people will say a river runs through it.
Willie Wonka's friends know the name.
#1..."will look rosie"...Umpqua has a rotating red and white frensel lens (red and white may look like a rose color)

#2..."look down from above"...it's located DOWN a winding road??? (this is from the lighthousegetaway.com )

#3..."a river runs through it"...Umpqua RIVER Light

#4..."Willie Wonka's friends know the name"...could this be a loose comparison between Umpqua and the "Oompa Loompas" (not sure if this is right...but this is actually how I got this one)

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/19/05 12:39 AM

Woah...you're good!

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/19/05 12:54 AM

You ARE Good, Jeff. You got the Umpqua River Lighthouse. No more guesses. Exercise those little grey cells for the Stairway Super Bowl.

"Look down from above and see Coasties Cozy." refers to the fact that the lighthouse is within a USCG housing area (base.) "Coastie" is a term for a person in the Coast Guard.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/19/05 01:02 AM

Just out of curiosity...when is the stairway super bowl going to be, and how will it work? I can't figure out a way that doesn't give anyone a time advantage. confused
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/19/05 01:39 AM

Jeez, Greg. You think I have that figured out already? wink

There'll be some chance and some skill involved. But only the people who've guessed a stairway so far will be eligible. confused

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/19/05 02:54 AM

Here's #12

Hint #1: Greek Terraplane Turned Around
#2: First Lit in 1874
#3: "...without a paddle"

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/19/05 03:02 AM

Lucky #13

Bet this one doesn't last long. smile

Hint #1. One if by land, two if by sea...
#2: At least there's a Hospital nearby if you slip on these steps.
#3: Some of the last visitors were seen sipping hot chocolate

It lasted longer than I thought, but MtnHkr (Bert) got it today. Hospital Point RR MA. Bert took a lucky guess, I think.

The hints:
#1 "One if by land, two if by sea..." recalls Paul Revere's ride, but what he saw was a light on the steeple of the Old North Church

#2 "At least there's a hospital nearby..." Hospital Point, anyway; no hospital anymore.

#3 "Some of the last visitors were seen sipping hot chocolate" It was a stop on the NELL "Hot Chocolate, Lighthouses and YOU" event some days back.

Thanks to Mombo for the photo of this stairway and the one of Sisters Island NY.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/20/05 07:11 AM

All the unguessed ones got new hints tonight. While you sip some hot chocolate, perhaps the name of ONE of these lighthouses will come to you. smile

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/21/05 05:23 AM

Each un-guessed stairway has received a new clue. No activity; no guesses for a while. Is there NO ONE out there who wants to simply GUESS?

If there are no more guesses by Sunday evening, I'll reveal the answers and the Stairway Super Bowl will begin soon. (As soon as I figure it out.)

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/21/05 08:33 AM

OK John here is a guess.

I don't recognize any of the unguessed stairs, but going by your clue is #11 Admiralty Head? confused

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/21/05 02:52 PM

We'll take a stab at one. Is #9 Sister Island?

Only visitor I know is a WACKO.
(Mombo)

Climb this tower and you can look at a Saint.
(Saint Lawrence River)

E=mc2
(Theory of Relativity - Relative - Sister)

Eight minutes to three
(252 - HL Edition number)

Retired March 31, 2001
(Limited to one year production)

And the winner is...
(Mombo chose this lighthouse in HL's register and win contest.)

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/21/05 05:59 PM

Stephanie - Sorry, not Admiralty Head - you can guess another today or guess that one again tomorrow.

Tom & Joyce - YOU GOT IT! Perfect score on all the clues, too.

Boy that one went on the longest. This isn't the first time this picture as been seen on the CF. Mombo showed it to us after she visited the lighthouse.

No more guessing for Tom & Joyce.

Who's next??

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/22/05 08:25 AM

Only two more stairways to guess...

...Stairway Super Bowl will start this coming week. The commissioner hasn't figured out the rules yet, but he's said winning will be a little bit of skill and a little bit of luck.

From his office in East Rutherford New Joisee, the commish announced tonight that the winner of the 2005 Stairway Super Bowl will receive a Harbour Lights Artist's Proof of Seven Foot Knoll MD! Better put those thinking caps on now.

#7 is Ponce Inlet FL

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/22/05 05:18 PM

Sorry Cathy, #7 was guessed and is Umpqua River in Oregon. The list of guessed lighthouses is summarized at the very top of this thread.

But read the clues and take a guess at the three remaining stairways: #11, #12, and #13. One guess per photo per day. You've got three guesses remaining today. smile

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/22/05 05:40 PM

The three remaining stairways each received a new clue today. These will be the last clues in this 'regular season.'

Some of our silent supporters might want to join up just to guess!

If you THINK you know, just click on Post Reply and take a chance. Please try to explain the clues as well.

Did I mention the Super Bowl Trophy prize?

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/23/05 05:49 AM

About 24 more hours before the final whistle blows. No more clues. There are people out there who KNOW these lighthouses and have held back to let the new members have their chance.

Now it's time for anyone to guess. WACKO, SUPERWACKO or Newbie.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/23/05 10:34 PM

Can I try and guess the unguessed ones? I think I can figure two of them out. But if anyone new members are going to post them, they should have first dibs.

Hospital Point Rear Range Light. Guess

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 01:39 AM

You got it, Bert. A 'lucky' guess? Or did the clues help?

Still #11 and #12 to go and a few more hours... Ruthie you should know at least one of the two remaining ones and you can still guess on those.
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 03:25 AM

You COULD Google some of these clues.
Posted By: MtnHkr

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 03:37 AM

The clues helped, but it was still a guess as I was unable to attend the LHHC&Y trip that would have put me there to climb.

#12

Hudson-Athens Lighthouse
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 05:09 AM

#12 is CORRECT. Congrats, Dottie (isn't it?)

Care to explain the clues?

Just one more left #11. Who can guess it?
Posted By: Zachary

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 05:16 AM

#11-Point Sur, CA
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 05:22 AM

And we have our final WINNER. Congratulations, Zachary! You are in the 'Stairway Super Bowl!'

Now can you clue us in on the clues?

Our regular season is over. Those who have made the finals need to practice up on their lighthouse knowledge over the next 5 days. Watch for more information on the Stairway Super Bowl after I've made it up (really!)

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 05:54 AM

#12 Hudson Athens Lights

Hint #1 Greek Terraplane turned around.
Terraplane is a model of a Hudson auto and Greek for Athens, NY

#2 First lit in 1874 - self explanatory

#3 "...without a paddle" - haven't got a clue

Thanks for the suggestion of a Google search. Figured with two out of three I would take a chance and guess. It was a learning experience as I gained some knowledge about the old Hudsons.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 03:15 PM

I don't know the first 3, but, the USS Macon was an experimental Navy aircraft that crashed off the coast of Point Sur in 1935
Posted By: Webmaster

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/24/05 03:44 PM

Good work, Zachery. You don't have to get all the hints to know which lighthouse it was; any one will work.

Quote:
#1: Perhaps jousters would be at home here.
#2: Lighthouse 101
#3: Peaceful
#4: In 1935, keepers witnessed the crash of the U.S.S. Macon offshore. This ship FELL FROM THE SKY!
Jousters - those Knights on horseback who charge one another with pointed lances. Knights?
"Sir" Point Sir?

Lighthouse 101 - Highway 101 which passes this lighthouse.

Peaceful - "Pacific"

USS Macon fell from the sky off Point Sur Lighthouse - It was a Navy dirigble (airship) - still the largest aircraft that ever flew.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/25/05 05:47 PM

Dottie I haven't got a clue either on "without a paddle" and it was my photo! wink

Maybe John is thinking of the Saugerties Lighthouse which sits at the mouth of the Esopus Creek? Hudson-Athens and Esopus Meadows both sit out in the middle of the Hudson River.

Re: Stairway to the Top #2 - 01/25/05 05:50 PM

Actually, I was thinking of the expression "Up a river..." but only after seeing Dottie's quandry, did I remember it is "Up a creek..."

When you said Without A Paddle, I thought of the movie that came out last year
