What lighthouse is this?

What lighthouse is this? - 09/19/04 05:38 PM

I was browsing Getty Images' website (great way to pass a day!), and did a search for "lighthouse" to see what would come up. I got a photo from 1983 that showed then-Vice President George HW Bush vacationing in Kennebunkport, ME with his family. In the background, there is a lighthouse.

I couldn't figure out what light it was, so I decided to turn it into one of the ever-popular "Identify the Light" games. It has no lantern, just two aerobeacons.

Here's the photo: http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/CFW/details_Pop.aspx?iid=782442&cdi=0

Thanks in advance for the help, and have fun! Knowing me, it's Portland Head.

That would probably be Goat Island which is either on 'his' island or very near it. Looks like it didn't have a lantern room in 1983.

What you are seeing is the Wood Island lighthouse in Biddeford Pool, Maine during its headless days. There is a story attached to the above link that describes it's headless days and how the people were very upset.

Thanks Bert! I didn't know Wood Island had a headless period, especially as it seemed it happened while the light was still manned. Interesting. I kept thinking Wood Island, but it didn't look like Wood Island, so I wasn't sure.

Of course, the people in the boat don't really look like the Bushes, so I guess nothing was recognizable in 1983. wink

Probably the reason it didn't look like Wood Island is because you get a different view from the other side of the island. Sure those people look like Bushes, Greg, at least George and Barbara do. But how could you expect to recognize what they looked like 21 years ago.....? wink
