Looks kind of foreign. What nationality is that guy sitting on the rock? wink With that shirt he looks like he could be the front range light! laugh

Depending on which side of the Bosphorus you are talking about, Turkey is pretty much the only country that is considered to be part in Europe, part in southwest Asia.

Is this the light, George?

Fenerbache, if it is the correct light, if a challenge to find. It is the primary marina on the Asian side of Istanbul. Here is the only map that I could find to the place. My guess would be that this is not necessarily where the light is, but it is probably in the vicinty? Fenerbahce is also one of the three Istanbul soccer clubs. Don't forget, soccer there is equal to the NFL here.

Re: LIghthouse?? - 07/05/04 10:30 PM

Gee, George, that one was tough enough. Could not find any sites for lighthouses of Turkey, ended up going to one for coins and stamps. Found a picture that looked kinda right and then started searching again using the place name.

Many years ago I lived in Turkey for two years. One year our Boy Scout summer camp was in the Istanbul area. A small number of us were allowed to attempt one thing that is possible only in the Straits of Bosphorus: an inter-continental swim (Asia to Europe or vice-versa). Somewhere I have my special B.S. medal and certificate. I doubt they would even consider letting anyone do it today. We did it early in the morning; each swimmer had a small boat accompanying them; if a ship (sea going freighter size) was passing you had to tread water to allow it to pass. Don't remember which side we went in on, but you swam with the currents which took you down a ways, then across the center of the Straits and then the currents on the other side took you back to where you needed to be. Quite the adventure for a young teenager!

Dave,

What a fantastic adventure! It should live in your memory forever. Just one question though, if you had the permissions to perform that feat again today, could you still do it?

Re: LIghthouse?? - 07/12/04 10:58 PM

I've already given the continent away if you can unscramble letters.

The correct answer will state:

Country (10 letters)
city (7 letters)
lighthouse name (16 letters in 3 words)
"LIGHTHOUSE" does not appear in the name.

and use these each only once:

AAAA,BB,C,D,EE,H,III,J,NN,OOOO,PP,RR,S,TTT,U,V V,Y

I am somewhat stumped past this.

You have the correct continent!

More clues in a day or so to give everyone time to ponder the letters and the picture content.

Re: LIghthouse?? - 07/13/04 03:52 PM

No need for more clues - I was sent the correct information by a certain non-posting Forum participant in Maryland -

It is POINT BOUVET PHARE, ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST . I was looking at an interactive type map of Africa, not sure how I overlooked Ivory Coast. He had somewhat better connections than I did on this one!

I know it! Try a country with two words in it's name Dave. smile

Re: LIghthouse?? - 07/13/04 04:23 PM

Oh, I think I looked at that one too! I spent a half hour combing through the LH Digest database...went to bed halfway through the Ivory Coast. cool

That was a good one, George. Got another? laugh

Darn, I didn't get to give my next clue which was: "Handsoap with his foot off the gas" (LOL).

I'll have another challenger ready on 7/19 when I return from a trip to FL . Have to run to Barbershop Chorus practice right now!!
