The basics:

We all know or could count up the number of lighthouses that we've seen as individuals, couples or families but the other day I got wondering how many we've seen as a group. Maybe it would be fun to list them here. We could start with one state and see how many we've seen in that state and go from there.

Here's the rules. Only one person posts the same lighthouse. One post per person per day. When we get stuck we'll move on to another state. Latecomers can add a new lighthouse to a previous state. After we've finished all the states I'll tally up the final result. A "seen" lighthouse can include a distant view. Seen is seen. For this purpose it's quantity we're looking for! Reproductions are ok but not faux lighthouses.
We are now doing Alabama and Mississippi together, due to the small amount of combined lights between the two (6).

No entries here for a few days so we'll move back to the Northeast for lighthouses seen in Rhode Island.

The only one I've seen so far is Watch Hill.

Newport News Middleground

I see it from the bridge often, but got to see it up close and personal in 2002 when the Chesapeake Chapter of the USLHS and the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society held a joint event which included a cruise to see the VA Tidewater lights.

Re: Collective Lighthousing, Part IV - 12/08/04 07:27 AM

Lonnie,
Counts with me. We were in the Florida Keys last week and took the ferry to Fort Jefferson. The original cement base and brick surrounding the base are still viewable inside the Fort and Stan took a photograph of me standing at the base. (When we got it developed, the look on my face appears to be saying "Hey! It was here just a minute ago.") I'm counting that shot and the shot of the still-standing Fort Jefferson Light as two separate lights.
The 64' white skeletal tower that replaced the original Rebecca Shoal lighthouse was lost in Hurricane Charlie, but a beacon is attached to what remains of the base and it's still used as a navigation marker.
We also took a plane ride (4-seater Cesna) and got pictures of 5 offshore lights--that part of the trip was thrilling and I'm afraid of heights!
