Kristen,

Good to see your name listed again. Where have been hiding?

Yes, I'm going to try again to get to LI. I'm not sure why, but 3 out of the 4 times I've had plans to get to LI Lighthouses things just did not work out.

That's life. I've gotten to many others.

Now's the time to make your plans! May is a wonderful time to visit Long Island and it's Lighthouses. Weather's GOOD and the summer season traffic is non-existant. You can take a few extra days before or after to visit most. Remember, the Lighthouses on this cruise include some of the most difficult to normally view!

If someone was coming from another state and flying in...would Islip be the airport to come into? Just asking..

Islip would be as good as the other two - JFK and LaGuardia. If you're planning on going to the other lighthouses too, Islip would be better. Islip is much smaller, and in a more rural location while the other two are big time heavy duty transportation centers airports. I always try to go out of Islip to avoid the hassle.

OK, Sheryl and I have almost decided that we are going to take this trip. It sounds like alot of fun and we haven't seen any of the Long Island lights yet. So, if we come down the night before, where would be a nice place to stay? And how would be a good way to drive down to Long Island without having to go through the City? To CT and take a ferry across? Any advise would be welcome. confused

Another question for those of you on Long Island, if we do this trip, could we see all of the other lights on Long Island on Sunday or would it be better to see the ones on the western part of the island this trip and make another trip in the future to see the ones on the western part.

Where are you coming to Long Island from Eskilady? If you're going to hit Connecticut anyway (as you mentioned), and if you're looking to see a bunch of Long Island lighthouses, definitely take the ferries...I'd go on one going there and the other going home...you can take either the Cross Sound Ferry from New London, CT to Orient Point, Long Island...or you can head further west first and take the Brideport-Port Jefferson Ferry...which brings you a little more to the middle of Long Island to start...Plenty of places to stay...all depends on what your plans are...
but considering you are ultimately heading west anyway to Nassau County...and are interested in seeing Long Island lighthouses, I'd start at Orient Point if you have the day before to go lighthousing (or do it the opposite way if you're trying for the day after)...
...if you want to see a bunch of the eastern most Long Island lighthouses, I'd definitely take the ferry from New London, CT...if it's a clear day, you may get to see quite a few, but bring your binoculars (I did this one time at 8 o'clock at night going to New London from Orient Point, and it was pretty cool because it was dark and you could identify every lighthouse there by the color of the light and it's blinking pattern)...but you'll get a pretty close view of both Plum Island Lighthouse and then Orient Point Lighthouse as you pull into and then out of Orient Point (different view from both directions because of the traffic flow of boats)...then you can get a distant view of Bug Light from the road as you drive along...you can stop at Horton Point lighthouse and pull right up to it...if you're up to it, you can take the Shelter Island Ferry to the South Fork and visit Cedar Island (involves hiking up the beach to get close...or distant views otherwise)...and then you'd have to drive all the way back east on the South Fork to get to Montauk Point.
...from the Brideport-Port Jefferson Ferry, you could see Stratford Shoal and then Old Field Point from the water...not very close up views though

Kristen

Thanks for all this help and it sounds wonderful. My friend and I are coming from an area just south of Syracuse so I don't know which way would be best. Since we aren't leaving here until about noon on Friday, we might be too late to see the lights. How hard is it to get on the Ferrys? I have never been on a ferry where I myself drove my car on - I think that I wouldn't be able to do it - my judgement is not all that good. But it does sound like fun!!

Getting on the ferries is very easy, and there are always folks there to direct you.

I would recommend, however, if you are planning on taking the ferry into or out of Orient Point that you make a reservation, because it tends to fill up quickly.

I don't think it is necessary for the Port Jefferson ferry, but you may also want to get a reservation for that one too.

This is your other half Carol, I have taken alot of ferries that you can take along the car. NO PROBLEM !!! Have no fear if we need to do it, we will. Nothing will stop us from getting to a lighthouse... laugh
