Bodie INTERIOR Pictures - 04/28/03 07:29 PM

On Fri, I was at Bodie Island Light and got the rare oppurtunity to go in the base. I took these digital photos so you could see the condition in there, what with our Wacko projects supporting them. Here are 5.

This is the sign with the lat/long coords for the light. Notice the spelling of "Bodie" as "Body's"

Here is a sign that they have on the plastic that surrounds the interior of the light.

Here is a photo looking down the entry hall to the staircase.

Here is a view of the plastic surrounding the light with the sign on it.

Here is a photo looking into a room off the side of the entry hall, which was probably a work room or storage room.

here are more:

This is the fireplace in the workroom.

Here is what looks like the wall in the work room.

Here is the "bench" where the barrels of oil were stored before the construction of the oil house (see below).

Here is the sign describing the oil room.

Here is a shelf in the oil storage room.

Here is the window above the door leading out.

And finally, here is the window going from the entry hall to the tower. You can see that it is all boarded up.

Seagirt, thanks for sharing. It's such a shame to see a great light like this in such need. When we were there a few years ago, I had no idea of it's condition

Do you know what the purpose of the plastic is?

Sea girt - Thanks for showing everyone that the $$ raised from the pin, picture and badge are certainly needed! I was there 2 yrs ago, and the interior is certainly going downhill.

Any idea what the plastic is all about? Is it protecting walls from more damage or what?

Depending on how long ago the interior was last painted, the plastic could be there to keep your hands off lead based paint? Other option might be severe peeling / cracking of the paint and walls.

I haven't sold any prints lately... this is what the funds are going for, to help restore the tower..

Re: Bodie INTERIOR Pictures - 04/29/03 04:13 PM

I see many people want to know the purpose of the plastic sheeting on the wall. I'm not sure what it's for. Maybe in case of a chemical or biological attack? laugh

I just noticed I made an error. The bottom picture in the first post is actually sideways. Tilting your head to the left will reveal that it is really looking in the doorway of that room. Sorry!!!

I rotated it around for you... It is now correct!

looking at the Bodie print, one would never have realized that the inside is in such bad shape.

Re: Bodie INTERIOR Pictures - 04/29/03 08:52 PM

I was interested in the variation of the name spelling. From what I learned, it was thought that the island was owned by a family named Body.

When I lived on the Outer Banks the old saying was the name came from all the bodies that washed ashore from ship wreaks.

Seagirt,

It is wonderful that you had the opportunity to photograph the inside of the tower, fantastic that you are sharing them with all of us on the Forums and keeping the fact out front that the lighthouse needs our help desperately.

All of the folks reading the posts in these Forums should help Bodie Island Lighthouse by taking part in one or more of the fundraisers that are on the Forums. It is a win win situation. You not only help to save our maritime heritage for future generations but you get a pin, badge and/or limited edition print for yourself.

A big thank you to all of you lighthouse lovers out there for caring and to Seagirt for sharing.
