If anyone is planning on attending this event, make sure you stop by the Long Island Chapter's tent and say "hello." I'll be working there all day. wink laugh

Wow, what a beautiful day we had yesterday for this event! Such a change from a year ago when the LI Chapter held a meeting out at the Cedar Island Light on a cold windy day. Yesterday was the complete opposite, it was the perfect temperature and it was beautiful skies all day.

More details to follow later but I thought I would post a couple of pics for everyone.

As you can see, the oil house is a good indication that this light is not doing so well. Last year I had the chance to peek inside of the light and it is a disaster inside. Hopefully the LI Chapter's efforts will help to bring this light back to its former glory.

This is a pic of myself and fellow forum member moopies5 a.k.a. Geri.

Dennis....please note that I AM wearing my Wacko badge! And yes Geri had hers as well.

Shirin,

Glad you had a good day for the event.

Hopefully a large number of people got to it. I spoke to Bill Saturday afternoon and he just loved the dinner on Friday night.

He said it went very well.

I'm glad to see you have your Wacko Badge this time! As John pointed out it's a great way to advertise both the forums and the cause the Badge is helping.

Bill must have had a great time Friday night as he was still talking about the event today at the signing event in Poughkeepsie. Glad to hear that that cruise went well even with some rocky weather. The thunderstorm and fog didn't deter anyone that night!

What a busy lighthouse weekend here on Long Island!

Friday night, the Long Island Chapter had a Keepers' Dinner cruise aboard the paddlewheeler Martha Jefferson. We were pleased to welcome Bill Younger as our keynote speaker. Also aboard the boat were 5 former lighthouse keepers: Louie Anderson-Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor (1930s), Gottfried Mahler-Fire Island (1948-1954), Tom Rysedorph-Little Gull Island (1958-1960), Kevin Brennan-Race Rock (1959) and Tony Tuliano-Plum Island (1977). Each of the keepers shared stories from the lightkeeping days. Gottfried also did a slide presentation about life at the Fire Island Lighthouse.

The weather Friday night was iffy, as we had a thunderstorm as we were boarding the boat. Probably the most amusing sight was watching Bill nonchalantly stroll up to where we were waiting to board the boat. laugh

On Saturday, we celebrated the 1st Annual Suffolk County Lighthouse Day and had gorgeous weather! Temps in the 60s, and a few clouds in the sky. I even managed to get a bit of sunburn.

We had lots of vendors with every kind of lighthouse merchandise available (and even some non-lighthouse stuff too). Representatives from the National Lighthouse Museum, NJ Lighthouse Society, Huntington Harbor Preservation Society and some other local historical societies were present.

It was a great day, and hopefully we raised awareness about Suffolk County's lighthouses, and in particular the Cedar Island Lighthouse.

Glad to hear that Bill enjoyed his trip with us on Friday night! We, of course, enjoyed having him along. laugh
