Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/10/04 04:20 AM

Any objection to a LSS?

Old Harbor LSS in Provincetown is being restored by Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Other Suggestions:
Race Point
Cedar Island
Isle OF Shoals
North Light, Block Island
Sand Island

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/10/04 05:56 AM

Jim,

An objection would be too strong a term, but unfortunately a LSS doesn't fit the criteria.

Also which Sand Island Lighthouse are you nominating- Alabama or Wisconsin ?

I know it's asking more but it's helpful if you ad the state to the name of the Lighthouse since we have some that are duplicated.

Avery Point, CT. This is a lighthouse currently under renovation as it was on the Endangered List of Lighthouse Digest. It is the only lighthouse to honor lighthouse keepers.

What was I thinking????

Pottawatomie Lighthouse please. In 'light' of it's recent fresnel lense fund raiser, how appropriate.

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/11/04 03:57 AM

Hi gang,

I beg to differ with Dennis on Round Island Lighthouse on Round Island, MI.

The non profit for it is the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association. It is NOT a private residence. This light is located off from Mackinac Island. In fact you sail right by it going to the harbor.

Mary

Mary,

I've added it back to the list of nominated Lighthouses as I indicated in my e-mail to you.

Thanks for the clarification. It is appreciated.

Well if we don't pick a west coast light, I also would pick Pottawatomie Lighthouse It would sure put a big laugh smile on fellow WACKO JJ's face.

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/11/04 05:18 AM

Out of respect to the other JJ and all the folks who have worked so hard:
1. Pottawatomie
2. Avery Point
3. Sodus Point, NY
4. Harbor of Refuge
5. North Light, Block Island
6. Plum Beach, RI

Fort Niagara Light is in a State Park and I am not sure that it has a separate non-profit group in charge of fixing it up.

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/11/04 06:02 AM

Jim,

I'll take Ft Niagra off the list. I thought that there was a group involved. My memory must be going. I was relying on it based on the posts you made about your group and it's cleanup days at Ft. Niagra.

Sorry for the confusion that it caused- my fault entirely. I should have souble checked my memory.

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/11/04 07:48 AM

OK, I am going to post this again because the thread was closed shortly after I posted my nomination and many people did not see my post.

I nominate POTTAWATOMIE Lighthouse, Rock Island, Door County, Wisconsin

Many WACKOs at the May 15, 2004 dedication ceremony and open house wanted to know where the FRESNEL LENS was!! Well, the Friends of Rock Island want to have a replica 4th Order FRESNEL LENS made and installed in the lantern room by the next Door County Lighthouse Walk in May 2005! The cost for the lens and installation is $26,000. They have a 50/50 grant and need to raise $13,000.

This WACKO badge promotion would help Pottawatomie get a long missing 4th ORDER FRESNEL LENS back in the Lantern Room! Wouldn't this be great?!

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/11/04 07:56 PM

Dennis,
Ft. Niagra is indeed in a state park BUT our club, Eastern Great Lakes HL Collectors Club, has been working to help clean up this light and continues to be involved in this effort.
Just wanted to point that out. Maybe being in a state park makes a difference.

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/12/04 02:54 AM

I'd like to add to the support of Cedar Island Lighthouse
I'd love to see the holes in the roof closed up soon! I know the birds enjoy the home they've found, but it's time for them to move on & for this lighthouse to get put back together smile

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/12/04 04:16 AM

Rick,

That's exactly the reason I initially listed it in the nominations.

Jim johnson of your club posted the info that there is not a non-profit group associated with Fort niagra.

Cleanup projects are a different thing, I guess.

Okay, that helped. Now we're back where we started. Maybe we can have two badges. laugh

I'm going to add

9) Old Cape Henry, VA. If I remember, they're having some problems with the stability of the light. Not sure if it's eligible.
Posted By: wheland

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/16/04 12:44 AM

Greg,

Old Cape Henry is eligible- it's maintained by The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.

We are not on the other hand going to have two Wacko Badges- we're not going through this process to nominate a group of 5 Lighthouses and then end up with 2 at the end.

I'll be announcing the top 5 Lightouses later this week and I'll also be announcing the procedure for the next round at the same time.

I'm glad we've got some West Coast and Great Lake Lighthouses in the running- especially since the East has done so well in the past in this process and we will be having the 2005 Reunion in the Great Lakes area. It would be very approriate for the Wacko Badge to come from that area.

Re: 2005 Wacko Badge Voting Booth Pt 2 - 11/16/04 02:54 AM

OK, I'm going to add "Todd's Lighthouse", the Saginaw River Rear Range Lighthouse.

I'm not sure that it's eligible as it's owned by Dow Chemical but from what he's posted lately perhaps it is???

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=001008

I sent him an email to ask last night but haven't heard back.

In the meantime maybe some other folks who haven't used up their quota think it's worthy of consideration and might like to nominate it also.

They both want to add their nomination for Pottawatomie.

Chuck,

It is in a class by itself- it's the only nomination that came in after the deadline of 12 midnight Eastern Time.

I'm closing this thread now and I'll announce the 5 Lighthouses that got the most nominations later today and will announce the voting procedures shortly after that.
