Lightship, A Novel of the Sea - 12/12/02 07:07 PM

While not as big a find as that posted by Bob S, somewhat of a re-find regardless.

Recently I got my son to go through some of his "stuff" in an ongoing attempt to reduce clutter. I make a habit of going through what he discards to be sure he doesn't toss any "good stuff"!

Lo and behold there was a small (4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch) paperback book entitled "Lightship" A Novel of the Sea by Archie Binns. While there is no publication date (the story is copyright 1934) I would imagine it is from the WW II timeframe. It is numbered B-47 and is one of some 30 books (acording to a list inside the back cover) that were produced in this format for distribution to Armed Services personnel.

On the cover of the book it says, "This book is intended for use by the United States Armed Forces only, and is not to be reprinted and is the property of the U. S. Government. It has been published by the Council on Books in Wartime, and is distributed by the Special Service Division, A.S.F. for the Army and by the Bureau of Naval personnel for the Navy."

While a novel the story must be based on Mr. Binns' personal experience since he had served "on a Pacific Coast lightship for almost a year" and the description of this book states that it is about "the nine men on a certain lightship off the Columbia River bar."

Now I did recall having seen this book a while back, but before I became interested in lighthouses. When I asked Bill where it had come from he said, "Linda (his sister) gave it to me. I think she found it in a thrift store". Obviously this book went into the "Save" pile! smile

Great find Sue, and in your own home. Never know what you'll find when you start cleaning up. I've got tons of stuff to go thru and hopefully will get it done before the year 2010! Only kidding! I've been getting rid of stuff for months, but no real goodies to keep just yet.
