round robin/ exchanges

round robin/ exchanges - 01/09/08 12:32 AM

With it being a new year, I thought I would see if there is renewed interest in these. I know the last time this was discussed, our list of participants has grown smaller with the selection of cards getting stale, and the usual folks that run them would like to spread that responsibility around.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Let me start the ball rolling with the idea of just one BIG round robin, instead of the multiple smaller ones. It would take longer to get around, but maybe the selection would be more varied. Also, lets open this to overseas players. If there is a concern about postage, I would volunteer to be in the position in the rotation that had to pay the shipping to send it out of the country...

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/09/08 01:53 AM

I don't think the problem is with mailing one or two packets; the big problem is in the Christmas card exchange where the overseas folks have to mail to 24 or 25 people in the US - that gets very pricey for them.

Dave usually starts the robins early in the year, so I'm ready to go! laugh

OK, it's been a while and a certain Yankees fan has been bugging me about re-starting the Post Card Round Robin exchanges. For those not sure of what these are:

• Exchanges should be about 6 people each.
• The exchange leader puts an envelope of 10 lighthouse post cards into the mail to the first person on the list.
• That person reviews the cards in the robin. They may remove any or all of the cards, but must replace with an equal number of lighthouse post cards from their stash.
• Robin gets sent on to the next person on the list.
• Repeat until the robin returns home to the person who started it.

Hopefully along the way the participants have had an ever changing selection of cards to choose from to add to their collection. With people from different parts of the country we generally get a nice assortment of US and sometimes international cards.

Basic rules are pretty simple:
• Must be new/not written on or mailed cards
• No more than 2 cards of the same light may be inserted into the robin. Want each recipient to have a nice selection of different cards to choose from.
• As noted before, cards must feature lighthouses. Lightships are acceptable.
• Each person should review the robin and have it back on the road within 2 days or so

Interested? Sign in below. If you have not previously participated please email me your snail mail address. Ideally we will have 12 or so folks interested. If we have enough over that number we will start more robins, trying to keep each one at about 6 players. As each set of robins finishes up, participants will be shuffled between the robins and the order of play shuffled - this helps to keep things from getting stale.

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/19/08 01:52 AM

By my count we have 13, I think...?

BUT, we still need someone to volunteer to get this one off the ground. The last correspondence that I can recall from Dave is that he was NOT going to be able to do one anytime soon. If we don't get any takers, nothing will happen...

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/19/08 05:21 AM

A person or persons who has participated in a previous round robin needs to step up and volunteer. I don't have the time to do so at this time.

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/21/08 11:48 PM

Most of the folks interested have been members for a long time... Any "Super Wackos" that are willing to get this one going?!
Posted By: Tammy Wolfe

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/23/08 04:37 AM

Are we going to do two robins or just one?

If you're willing to wait until February (I've been working 10 - 14 hour shifts on weekends in January) AND someone sends me the instructions that are included, I'll start one robin.
Posted By: Sooner Schooner

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/24/08 01:52 AM

I was thinking of doing it slightly different by doing just one bigger robin. It would take longer, but I think it would have a better chance of getting a fresher selection of cards with more people in it. It is almost next month anyway, so I don't see a problem with that. I was going to make a similar request, if there were no takers...
I have printed old lists from envelope/no envelope exchanges, but I didn't have the e-mail version of one left, that I would need as a template for the mailing labels for the robin... if anyone still had one left on their pc. If you like Tammy, I'll go ahead and attempt this one.

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 01/30/08 07:05 PM

Hi folks,

It has been a week since I've heard from Tammy...
If nobody has any objections, I will go ahead and run with my idea of one large round-robin. I will need EVERYONE to e-mail or private mesg me with your names and mailing addresses please. Lets make the deadline for that Thursday Feb. 7th, that will give everybody a week to get their information sent into me. (One already has.)ALSO, if anybody has an old mailing list on their p-c, from robins or exchanges, that they can forward to my e-mail, so I can use it as a template for the mailing labels, would be a help.
Be gentle, this is my first time attempting this myself!

OK-- it is off and running as of today! First, it will go to Dave (UK), then back to the states for the rest of the journey. The rest of the order is: Bob, Tom & Joyce, Darlene, Melody, Glen & Ellie, Cyndi, Grace, Lorie, Stephanie, Hilari, John, Kay, me (Bill). I stayed mostly with the instructions we usually have, not much change there. Don't forget to post here when you get it and when you send it on its away again, enjoy...

I was in NY for 5 days and then came home to move from one house into 2 different houses in 2 cities that are 300 miles apart. I have had moving people helping me for 3 straight days. We finally finished at 9:30 last night.

I will have the cards sent out in Tuesday's mail since Monday is a holiday.

Gee I have never seen a Robin take this long to make a round trip. She made her flight out on Feb. 19 on the first leg of this round. And still hasn't made the final run back home! eek That's almost 5 months to make a 14 stop run!

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 07/06/08 11:57 PM

Lorie, you weren't the only delay this poor Robin had. This was just a slow moving Robin, that's all!

I wasn't trying to point a finger at anyone. Just making the statement that this was a slow mover.

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 07/21/08 11:36 PM

Robin made it home for good last week! I hope the way I did it worked out for everybody. Interesting to note that it took about half a year to do it, that was OK by me.

Anybody else interested in starting a robin or no/in envelope next?!

I "MIGHT" be able to think about doing an "in envelope" exchange next, if there are no takers to start it & if we have enough interest for one.

DO NOT tell me yet... I will not be able to even think about one until later next month at the earliest. Feel free for somebody else to start another round of something!
Posted By: Sooner Schooner

Re: round robin/ exchanges - 07/22/08 10:10 PM

A note about the length of time it took for the robin to get around. I believe that this robin had a larger than normal size group for just one robin & we also had an overseas stop for the robin. Considering interest has declined to, for the most part, the diehard regulars & the usual folk that run these things were not able to do it, I think it worked out OK in this modified format. We had not had one in a while and I thought there was no reason to limit the number of players. And I thought it was well worth the wait to get some international cards in the mix. And, of course, people have things that come up to where they are unable to turn the robin around as quickly as they would like to.
