Antique Post Cards on CD ROM?

Antique Post Cards on CD ROM? - 03/15/01 03:34 AM

I'm wondering if there is interest in a CD ROM containing hundreds of full-size images of antique post cards of lighthouse and life-saving stations. Most cards would be pre-1950, many from the early 1900s.

The CD ROM would include a searchable index of the images and there might be a choice of several CDs with images based on US Regions plus International lighthouses.

Price to be determined - what would you expect to pay? Would you want scans of both the front AND the back (message side)?

It sounds like a great idea to me, John. I've been searching for copies of old postcards and specifically trying to find pictures of lost or rebuilt structures. It seems like most of the lighthouse CD's are in the $30 range. However, it also seems like older individual cards go on ebay for prices in the $5 to $20 range, so $30 for a CD with a hundred images might be a tad light.

John,

Sounds like a great idea to me. I'm trying to get postcards of all the lights i've been to.

Got most of them, but still have a list to go.

I'd say that it would be great to see both sides, but only if the message is more than "Wish you were here" type, and would have to be legible. Otherwise the space would be better spent in having twice as many postcard images.

Cost is a hard question to answer, but i'd say that somewhere between $ 30 to $60 depending on how many cd's there are in the set. It depends on how much it costs to get the rights to the images, if they are copyrighted.
