Lighthouse on Poster of Port Huron

Lighthouse on Poster of Port Huron - 04/20/03 06:20 AM

Many years ago (around the late 70's) I commissioned an illustrator to make a poster around the Port Huron-To-Mackinac annual sailboat race. Konrad Kahl did an excellent job and we offered both a signed, numbered and framed version of 100 of the posters and an unnumbered, unsigned version.

Here is the full size poster, framed to approx 40x15".

And here's a close up of the mid-section which features both the HURON lightship and the Ft. Gratiot lighthouse.

The Bayview Yacht Club of Detroit(sponsor of the race) was not too happy with my poster, saying in effect that they 'owned the race' and certainly they owned their 'burgee' (flag) which appears in the poster. I pointed out to them that the letter I got from the club which had their 'burgee' on the letterhead did not include any notice of copyright. Never heard from them again.

A neat poster, John. I can understand that the yacht club wants to protect it's "turf", but I would also think they would like the extra publicity. Capitalism at its best!
