SE Block Variation?

SE Block Variation? - 12/05/98 05:39 PM

I recently noticed that my SE block had a different color chimney cap on one of the four stacks. I thought this was unusual so I looked it up in the Greenbook. Well the picture in Greenbook had one different also, but upon closer examination it was not the same one that was different on my piece. I have piece number 1727 and the gray cap is on the large chimney on the FLAG side of the building but in the Greenbook picture the gray chimney cap is on the opposite side. Any feedback?

On my #1902, the gray cap is on the side opposite the flag.

I wouldn't consider this a variation, but a painting 'style difference' In the early years, color control wasn't as precise as today and the differences in color intensity, the 'blooms' on shrubery, etc. could vary quite a bit from one painter to another. Others' may feel differently, but in general, a recognized 'color variation' is one which the company ordered during a production run. This would include: green-to-blue water on New London Ledge, Minot's, Barnegat, and Michigan City, Brick color change on Round Island, Tan-to-grey tower on Beavertail.

I have #3560. The grey chimney cap is on the opposite side from the flag. If you visit the light on Block Island you will notice that exact same grey cap on the same side. The piece is a true representation of the Southeast Light.

I am sure that it was painted this way to represent the reality of the light, however, this is a painting mistake, not a color variation. Is there anyone out there with the same error in the painting? I am familiar with painting errors on Beavertail and the Green/Blue water variations but this one seem quite unusual, deliberate and strange.
