Great Captain Island ?

Great Captain Island ? - 01/24/04 06:22 PM

I purchased HL#114 Great Captain Island flag number 4,053 Malaysian mold no rod. The piece has the small window below date, tan bricks, light gray base with gray seahorse to the right of flag.
So far so good for HL#114 Malaysian mold no rod until I noticed that the date is 1863 not 1868.
Did the change in date from 1863 to 1868 occur
later in production than flag #4,053? All I can find on this from research is that the change in date occured later in production with no flag numbers listed. Although it does "NOT" appear that the ventilator ball area has been repaired could I have a Malaysian mold with rod now without rod that has been artfuly repaired?

Please weigh in with your thoughts.

THANKS!

I have the Great Captain Island, Malaysian mold and the number is 2895. No lightning rod and the date on mine is 1868. I remember that somewhere, someone had posted the change in dates on this one, but I cannot locate it. Maybe someone on the forums can fill us in.

I did find an old thread on the subject.

http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/cgi-bin/forumscgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=000054

The numbers and info on this thread are all over the place. If anyone can add to the information here in this new thread please do. Also please list the date 1863 or 1868.

THANKS!

I have #3265 and 1868. I had to look real close to make it out. I can see if the stamp is not right-on that 8 could be a 3.

Good point so I checked mine again and it is dated 1863.

Thanks again

My Great Captain Island HL is flag#4194, and the date on the front is "1868". The one I have is in mint condition. The original one I bought, many years ago, I hadn't examined closely. When I got it home, a closer examination revealed a chip off the corner of the roof. When I was unable to find the broken piece in the box, I returned it to the store for a refund.

Does anyone think that maybe the store knew it was defective but sold it as new out of their glass case which was locked? I would hope they didn't know it. They happily refunded my money.

Bob
Maybe not the manager but I bet one of the employees knew about it.
My Jupiter was signed by Bill while it was still in Layaway.
When I got it out of Layaway the fence was broken off. I was so surprised to see it broken. It was in perfect shape when I first saw it. Luckily the owner had an other Jupiter for me.

My number is 3188 with no rod. The date is 1868 but you can tell where the "3" was made into an "8".

I have a #76 and it is definetly a 1863, but when I looked closely it looks like the 3 is slighty different than the other numbers. It is the same size as the 1, but smaller than the 8 & 6, with the 8 being slightly larger than the 6. Also either the 3 is etched deeper than the other numbers, or it has a darker color because it stands out more than the others. I also have a #2190 Malaysian with no rod in storage, and I will try and find it to see what differences it has.

Thanks to all who have responded. Dick, let us know about your #2190. Keep the info coming. I am begining to think that perhaps the change in date took place not so much by the numbers but more by "whim" at the factory in Malaysia. Perhaps the change was done manualy rather than to the mold itself?

Re: Great Captain Island ? - 01/31/04 10:17 PM

This is what everybody is referring to...

I would image that the change was made to the master greenware male that makes the molds at the factory.. it would have been much more time consuming to correct each one like they did with the tree on Old Field...

If those with 1868 on them look just like this one it was done at the factory, if they are all different slightly, it means they were done individually..

Re: Great Captain Island ? - 02/01/04 03:51 PM

From the original thread on this subject I linked above plus information in the current thread looks as if the Malaysian mold without rod was produced with both dates 1863 and 1868 but in no particular flag number sequence??

The one I have is a Canadian piece (Edition #773) with a rod and a round Canadian sticker .... it clearly has a 1863 date on it.
