Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/04/08 12:16 AM

Somebody has HL 102, Mold 1, #11 on eBay. Wants $2,000 to start. No bids yet. My HL 102R, #304 is up to $177+ but hasn't met my reserve yet.

Yes Sandy,

I saw the CH1, #11, post early this morning. I truly believe that the seller is a tad optimistic with a starting price of $2000. Good luck to the seller, but I think he/she is blowing in the wind.

I think that CH-1, flag #11 will bring at least $2700 but no more than $3250. I would have put a reserve on it and lowered the starting bid to $100 to build up a little bidding competition. Yet again, I don't own it and never was fortunate enough to justify paying that sum of money for one HL.

Bob
I totally agree with you.
I feel it being the lowest number that could be attained through a dealer should get at least two collectors on a bidding war to have the bragging rights to the lowest numbered CH-1. The CH-1 was not offered thru the founders collection and it is possible that the first ten of the Cape Hatteras does not exist or was done in the type II and not type I, which would make this the lowest number possible for a CH-1. Does anyone know for sure if there is any Cape Hatteras out there with a lower number? Where they done in type II or Type 1? I remember we taked about a number 7 CH-2 four years ago on ebay and came up with the conclussion it was a fake.

CH1 #11 HL102 is back on ebay. Now starting bid is $50 with a reserve (which has already been adjusted once). Current bid is $510 today. Notice it has a glowing condition description, Calif. mold, C.of A., stamp card, but no box. No comment yet as to the ventilator tip color.

Daniel- What have CH1's been selling for recently in this condition w/o box? How do we know this one's for real? Any other threads you can refer me to?

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/12/08 10:17 PM

CH1 up to $1025 today(reserve not met). Seller states reserve is "substantially" below $2000. White ventilator tip shown in photos. Ends 2-13-08 at 20:00 PST. A % of sales price goes to charity.

Very interesting... Ten bidders looking for a great deal and at $1525 it would have been a fabulous deal. I willing to bet the reserve price may have been $2000. No one jumped on the "deal" before by bidding when the minimum bid was two grand. Think about it, a CH-1 for the price of a Coquille? Such a deal! Too bad the minimum wasn't $1500 because someone would have been grinning from ear to ear at the end of the auction.

I looks like our more serious collectors have some doubts about this particular piece with flag #11. What do you think?

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/14/08 03:16 PM

It was only a year ago that the CH-1 was going for $3,000 plus with or with-out box.
I think one thing that hurt this bid was the CH-1 last month that went for around $1,515.00. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110212028265&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001

The reason that bid was so low was that the seller did not offer PayPal and did not leave a good trusting feeling with the bidders. There also was no buyer protection. I think because of that bid, buyers are thinking the market is dropping for the CH-1 and its value is only around $1500. Thus making the value around $1500.

Now back to the current bid, this one did have PayPal which does offer protection, but it had buyer protection of $200 instead of the $2000. There was still PayPal protection as an arbitrator but I think the $2000 protection would have helped the bid outcome.

I didn’t see any thing on this one to not believe it is a number 11. The number does not look forged and the lighthouse by the picture appears to be in good shape. Like Bob and I said before even with the sluggish market this light should go for $2700 to $3200.

Daniel & Bob-Thanks for sharing your info and insights! I wonder how many CF members are fortunate enough to own a CH-1??

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/14/08 05:29 PM

There has been 13 different CH-1 on eBay since I started tracking them in 1999.
I also know of two others that make a total of 17 known to exist.
Just off the top of my head I can think of 10 fourm members that have a CH-1. I am sure there are more.

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/14/08 08:08 PM

Daniel-Out of 266 Ch-1 made, that leaves a lot to be accounted for(15 known). Does this seem low? Why are so many unaccounted ?

Would the 15 known include the estimated 10 in the hands of CF members? Would I assume most of these were bought on ebay?

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/14/08 10:45 PM

I have been made aware of several Mold 1's selling over the past year off of Ebay for under $2,000. I am thinking that a fare value is between $1,600 and $2,200. All this depending on quality, box, edition # and of course how bad do you want it? The number of collectors out there has to be smaller than there were at the last reunion just by the number of retailers declining. That was the last location I saw one sell for the $3,000 range. And that was because of the normal feeding frenzy that occurs during the Kim and Bill auctions of the past. Prices always spike around events, regionals and reunions. And you have them in your hands to inspect.

Just my humble opinion.............

If you use the number of 266 being made and shipped , you have to figure in that several were broken in shipment, plus others have broken since then.. That is why they stopped producing them and re-did the mold.. I have heard that as many as half of them may have broken in shipment to dealers and when handled by the first time owners.. It was and still is very fragile largely because they were made from plaster not resin which breaks easily..

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/15/08 10:01 PM

I assume by the time Point Arena HL156 was made, HL had changed their original casting plaster?? Point Arena also had breakage in the eroded rocks as well as the tower, and was also stopped way short of planned production w/o a revised version like CH-1.

Heard any ways to ship CH-1 or HL156 to avoid breakage??

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/15/08 10:37 PM

I have five Point Arenas in stock. Each and every one of them made it just fine through shipping.

I would definitely have the "hee-bee-gee-bees" if I purchase a CH-1 and it was being shipped a considerable distance.

You carefully wrap the light and pack it inside its original HL box so that it is snug and can't slide around. Then you pack it in another box, again being sure that it won't slide around. And, if you want to be really careful, put that into a third box and repeat the procedure. This does work.

Then you hand carry it and hand it to the other person, very carefully!!!

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 02/16/08 02:33 PM

I will share the CH-1 prices I have on my spreadsheet. I started making a spreadsheet on the variations of Harbour Lights so I could identify the variations and know their production numbers. Started sometime back in 1999 but most of the action on Ebay didn’t happen till 2004. When I started logging the variations my wife suggested that I attached what the lighthouse sold for. Well to do this I would have to go back after the bid and check the selling price. Wasn’t as diligent as logging in felt colors, lightning rods and box type, but I was able to keep up with about half. As I noticed that the prices were making a significant change in 2004 I started color-coding the dates in 2005. So what I have posted below are the prices of what I have for nine of the 17 different CH-1 that I have logged thru the years.
------------------------------------
Before 2005 on Ebay

$588.00 - White Tip –Damaged- broken ventilator ball
$3,025.00- White Tip
$3,800.00 -White Tip
$4,309.59 –Green Tip
-----------------------------------------------
2005 to 2006 on Ebay

$2,100.75–Green Tip
$3,000.00–Green Tip
---------------------------------

2007 on Ebay

$711.98-White Tip-Damaged-broken ventilator ball
$2,200.00–Green Tip
3,177.08 –Green Tip
------------------------------------------------

Daniel- Just wondered what "the 17pcs." figure for CH-1 you've mentioned in this thread includes?
Sales on ebay for trackable numbers, private collection holdings, etc.?

13 from Ebay
4 from other sources.

Re: Cape Hatteras, Mold 1, #11 - 05/18/08 02:41 PM

The Number 11 finally sold on ebay. This is a fine example of "Third times a charm". The CH-1 lowest number known to exist to us collectors has just been sold for $3,528.00. Remember the First 10 Hatteras was not offered in the founders collection. We have no idea where they are or even if they exist.

The $3,528 beats BobM's and mine earlier predition of between $2700 and $3250. I must admit I was starting to think that that perdiction was to high.
But the seller held out untill he got its true value.

The seller of this CH-1 was also the same seller of a misspelled Artist Proof Mulkilteo that sold for $ 500 on 4-21-08 on ebay. Both items were located in CA and listed by "schtuke (23*).

The buyer of both pieces was "dzurenkoil123 (639*).

Number's one through ten are out there Daniel. I talked to a one time store owner who sold numbers one through five at her store on the Outer Banks. She wishes she would have kept at least one of them.

It really does make you wonder where these extremely valuable pieces may be, and if the current owners know the true value of their treasure. One would think at least one or two may have been broken or discarded by now. Collectors evetually may pass away and their families have no idea about value of the lighthouses left behind. I imagine if you wait long enough, you may see another one or two pop up on eBay in the future.
