Couquille or Coquille ? - 05/11/00 06:21 AM

Spell it your way for $860.00,did or did not the illusive Coquille just go for the above figure on ebay ?

I haven't been to the HL Section of eBay lately, but if a Coquille LE went for $860 and it was in great condition the buyer got a great deal. If the Coquille was the open edition, the seller certainly would be smiling while the buyer would be crying.

This piece was a LE ( #441 ). However, there was no box and a picture was not included in order to verify the condition. It did sell for $860 with only 6 bids.

It is HL111 Coquille River, OR Limited Edition.....

Their ad stated it this way:
Harbour Lights #111 Coquille River, 441 of 5500, Good to great condition, original paperwork, no original box.

It is a double edged sword, it is a sad day for those of us who own a Coquille LE and I suppose then it is a good day for those who are looking to purchase a Coquille Limited Edition Lighthouse. I would imagine that the seller was countng on a last minute bidding frenzy that didn't materialize.

I'd say the seller probably lost out about $800 because he didn't look at the flag to see how Coquille was spelled.

However, those who searched for "Harbour Lights" should have found it so maybe they were wary that it wasn't what they thought it was.

The Coquille going for $860 in no way reflects a down turn in its value. Jim Rutherford has a very good article in the Guilding Light depicting this same situation of how improperly selling on ebay can make a collectable look like it is becoming less valuable. As John stated, it was misspelled. So that someone doing a search for a Coquille would have missed it. In addition, the seller had no references what so ever. The description also gave me negative feedback. Depicting its condition as Good to great condition does not sound very appealing. To a coin collector good condition means that at least you can read the date. They should have attached a picture and pointed out why it was not mint. The seller also could have said something about it. Like ”kept in smoke free environment”.

I think the one thing that kept the price down on this was "good to great condition"
The seller is stating that it is NOT in mint condition, and without a picture I think many bidders would be somewhat leary of it's value and appearance. I am not saying the piece is in poor condition. But what is the value of a Coquille thats not in mint condition ? A picture might have helped bring a better price if you could see exactly what the condition was. On the other hand the buyer might have got a heck of a buy with only minor paint flecks or something like that

Maybe the seller was only being honest. I'm always leery of all those HL's that are advertised as never been displayed and kept in a smoke free environment. How can anyone who loves HL's not display them at least for a short period of time. How many people advertise MIB when the piece probably sat in there curio or on a shelf for months. If I advertised a piece as MIB, I would say that piece was just stored and never displayed. If you believe everything you read about HL's on eBay, you would think that nobody ever removes them from their boxes and displays them.

The biggest mistake made on this auction was not putting a picture of the piece on display.

Bob,

you state......

"If I advertised a piece as MIB, I would say that piece was just stored and never displayed."

I wouldn't say that a piece that has never been displayed is necessarily MIB. Over time the changing temperatures, humidity, and way the piece was packaged in the box could all cause deterioration.

Very true, Ron...Perhaps there will never be a true MIB HL. It's all in the interpretation of the word "mint". How many car ads use the word "mint" to describe a previously owned motor vehicle. Who sets the standard for the words to be used to properly describe a collectible?

I sold many, many hundreds of Harbour Lights pieces as a secondary dealer and refrained from using the word "mint" or the term "MIB". Coins are minted and millions can be identical, while our cherished HL collectibles are hand painted and no 2 may be identical. I think these terms are overused and not appropriate to Harbour Lights.

I agree that the description of "good to great condition" without a photo did not help the seller achieve maximum value for the piece.

I'm sure a picture would have made a difference in the sale of this piece. However, not everyone can provide pictures for their e-bay sales.

I too, wondered about "good to great condition". I e-mailed and got a very satisfactory answer. The seller also volunteered additional information that was helpful to me. For example, why the piece was being sold and other questions that had been asked by potential buyers.

I think the seller was very honest and down to earth right from the start. He couldn't advertise MIB because there was no box. However, on a scale going from poor to good to great condition;it is my opinion'that this piece leans heavily toward great condition.
I will say we are very pleased with our purchase because we have wanted a Coquille for a long time.

That's the answer to most good buys, Warren. Ask questions, do your research and talk to the seller. (No need for speculation when you have all the facts.)
Now you have a very satified Buyer. Good job Warren!
