Are you planning on attending the Sep 20 Regional Event on Long Island?

Are you planning on attending the Sep 20 Regional Event on Long Island? - 07/12/03 02:33 AM

Please Take This Survey to indicate whether or not you plan to attend the Long Island Regional and what kinds of pre- and post-event things you'd like to do, whether or not you'll need a place to stay, etc.

This survey is similar to the one I set up for the San Diego Regional.

You can click on the survey link again if you change your plans and update your answers -- if you use the same computer as the first time you completed it.

Only 16 people have taken this survey so far. Over 100 took the one about San Diego Regional.

Haven't I read somewhere there is going to be a twilight boat tour on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 4:00-10:00pm to tour Long Island lighthouses. Does anyone have information on this?

Lorie,

Here's a link for info on the Cruise.

http://www.lilighthousesociety.org/events/2003/beaconsofthenightcruise/default.htm

There are a number of people who will be at the Regional who are planning on taking the Cruise- including Esther & I.

Lorie & Dennis,

In previous discussions, it has been stated that to make the cruise on time you will have to leave the regional event well before its conclusion. Doing this, of course, will take you out of the running for many of the give-aways and prizes.

Too bad they did not consider adding a 2nd cruise on Friday evening. They seem to sell out the Saturday cruise, so there are more "locals" interested in it, and I would venture a guess that we could tally up a fairly good sized number of forum folks who might be interested in a Friday cruise so they can stay at the regional and not have to try and speed across Long Island to make the cruise.

Dave,

I don't mean to argue with a Saint, but I think both are doable.

The boat boards at 5 PM and it's about a 2 hour drive from the area where the Regional is to where the boat is. The Regional is scheduled to 3 PM so you can do both and not miss too much of the Regional- of course these things do run over sometimes.

I agree that it would be better if Harbour Lights had planned it a bit better. The Cruise was scheduled before the Regional, in fact if I recall the Regional's date was changed from either the weekend before or after the weekend that is now planned.

Sometimes sacrifices must be made to follow the call of the Lighthouse. laugh

Well I took the survey, I think but don't recall what I said. I was thinking maybe we'd have time to go over to the Fire Island light after the regional. But is it really a mile walk from where you have to park your car to the lighthouse? I know I.O. wouldn't go for that. If there is a group who's planning to stay overnight somewhere in the vicinity we might like to join in.

If you take the survey again, you'll see all your answers (you can change them even). This prevents two people from taking the same survey from the same computer.

Mombo,

You can cheat a little bit- at least a passenger can.

You can take a shortcut by dropping off passengers at the end of the road. This cuts out about half of the walk on the Boardwalk from the parking area, but only for those dropped of. They have to wait there for the driver to park and walk back over.

It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk from the parking lot all the way out to the light.

I don't know Long Island at all and didn't realize the boat tour was as far away. I know from being at the last 2 regional events that they didn't end right at the exact time. I don't think I want to worry about having to rush out early.

John and I would really like to take a boat tour if any others are interested in doing that. In fact we're open for just about anything. wink We are arriving Thurs. night and going home on Wed. so we have plenty of time to do different tour ideas.

Please keep us informed of any plans. We also need a hotel for the week. Maybe some locals have some good suggestions for the rest of us as where to stay.

I know that it says that the boarding begins at 5, but if it doesn't depart until 6, I can still get my picture with the gold and still make that trip laugh .

Maybe HL would step up to the plate and move it up 30 minutes?

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Dennis, Long Island Bob S told me I probably can't make it in time for the boat tour after the regional and be at the conclusion of the regional.. He said too many variables and the boat isn't waiting..

Re: Are you planning on attending the Sep 20 Regional Event on Long Island? - 08/04/03 05:02 PM

According to my calculations it's about 80 miles from Freeport where the Regional is to Greenport where the Cruise leaves from.

The mapping program says about 2 hours. So, it's possible for someone who doesn't have to stay to the end and pack up things to get to the ship in time.

I'm not sure at what exact time they intend to leave the dock, but I'm going to find out. I may have to bow out myself if it proves undoable.

At the end is when the Gold Plated Southeast Block lighthouse winning names are drawn...

And I believe that some can be of people not present.

Your odds go way down if you aren't present because there is a max of two not present that can win... they keep drawing until they get someone that is present for the other three..

A friend who is originally from Long Island and visits often, advised me you will have a hard time making that trip in two hours.

There will be many boat trips in the future but very few chances to win a gold Southeast Block.

Re: Are you planning on attending the Sep 20 Regional Event on Long Island? - 08/12/03 03:26 PM

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the Regional. I had agreed to work the Chapter's table at the Greenport Maritime Festival on the 20th since the Regional was orginally going to be on the 27th. When HL changed the date, I couldn't back out of my commitment.

If we have the Wacko Beacons Cruise on the 19th, I most likely will be there--working of course!--(as well as on the regular Beacons cruise on the 20th).

Re: Are you planning on attending the Sep 20 Regional Event on Long Island? - 08/24/03 12:08 AM

I just finished up our post Long Island Regional lighthouse tour plans and hotel reservations... We are going to swing by a few old favorites that we have been to and a couple that we have managed to some how miss over the years...

Oh, I forgot to mention that they all happen to be in Maine! The two that we have missed over the years are Owls Head and Portsmouth and I have always wanted to go to both lighthouses..

The old favorites are of course Nubble, Portland and Pemaquid; Pemaquid is one lighthouse I am not happy with the images I shot while there... a couple of bus loads of what seemed to be all non-lighthouse people were strewn about all over the rocks for hours on end it seemed like.. and then the heavy overcast moved in and we moved out..

Finally before heading back to Indy in a bit more of a straight line, we will be spending two days on and Island that provides access to one of my all time favorite lighthouses to visit, the Island is Campobello... the lighthouse is East Quoddy..

Sue said if it's a nice day she will attempt the trip over to see the lighthouse this time... If you have never been to East Quoddy it is quite an adventure to go over to see the light, it is worth the long trip up to the tip of Maine!

Thanks go to Lightseeker who read my post and suggested that if I have missed going to Owl's Head that I want to make sure and go to Marshall Point if I haven't been there before since it is right on the way...

I missed Marshall Point the same two trips that I have missed Owl's Head and I was really sorry about that after HL came out with the Marshall Point Lighthouse..

Marshall Point is now on the post-Regional lighthouse itinerary, thanks Bruce..
