Door County Regional - Aug 25, 2007 - 03/09/07 06:50 AM

You may have already heard that the second Harbour Lights regional event for 2007 will be held in Door County, Wisconsin on August 25th. Here is the basic plan for the weekend:

We will be gathering at the Wagon Trail Conference Center in Ellison Bay (northeast part of the Door County peninsula) for the weekend. Special rates have been arranged for Harbour Lights regional participants.

Saturday, August 25, will be a lighthouse viewing cruise with a stop at Rock Island to visit Pottawatomie Light. That evening will be the actual regional event, which will be a buffet dinner at the Wagon Trail. In addition to the normal great prizes you would expect there will also be a gold Racine Reef piece awarded that evening to one lucky attendee. You will be able to participate in the cruise, the dinner or both. Pricing will be made available in the near future – waiting to finalize the menu so I know how much the dinner will cost.

Both Bill Younger and Harry Hine along with Tony Constantino are scheduled to participate in the Door County regional. There will be an on-site dealer at the regional dinner. In addition to having the Racine Reef regional piece they will also have the Detroit River signing event piece available.

If there is enough interest, I am willing to plan another bus trip starting and finishing in Chicago, similar to what was done surrounding the Mackinac reunion. At this point I would plan on the bus leaving Chicago Friday morning, August 24th (meaning you would need to arrive Thursday evening) and then returning to Chicago the following Wednesday or Thursday.

For additional information you can call me at (765) 452-1602 from 9 AM – 8 PM Eastern or email me at lighthouse-events @ sbcglobal.net (take out the spaces).

Sounds like your plate is extremely full. Drive the Vette to the wedding and sneak out to the regional. The Corvette Show sounds like an annual thing. It may be a while before you see another Regional in Door County. Let's hope the wedding doesn't become an anuual thing.

Updated information and hotel registration form has been emailed to those who indicated an interest in attending the Door County regional.

The regional is Saturday, August 25th. You may choose to participate in a lighthouse viewing cruise Saturday as well as the regional dinner itself Saturday evening.

The hotel that will serve as our headquarters will be the Wagon Trail Resort on Rowleys Bay (northeast corner of Door County). Door County is a fun place to explore, not only for the lighthouses but also for crafts, wineries and lots of great scenery.

The lighthouse viewing cruise will depart from Gills Rock Saturday morning at 9 AM, and is scheduled to return by about 4 PM. We expect to view lights on Poverty Island, St. Martin Island, Plum Island and Pilot Island. We will stop at Rock Island to visit Pottawatomie Light - this will involve a bit of a hike to the light. Lunch and snacks will be included. This cruise is similar to the one offered during the annual Door County Lighthouse Walk, but I do not plan to pack in the same crowd they have to. That said, there will have to be 50 participants to make this cruise feasible.

That evening will be the actual regional event, which will be a buffet dinner at the Wagon Trail. Dinner will start at 7 PM. Menu tentatively will be: Tossed Garden Salad with choice of Dressing, Homemade Fresh Dinner Rolls, Creamy Cole Slaw and Whole Cranberry Salad, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Homestyle Stuffing, Chef’s Choice Vegetable, Country Baked Chicken and Burgundy Beef Tips, Choice of Coffee – Regular or Decaf, Hot or Iced Tea, Milk or Soda.

In addition to the normal great prizes you would expect there will also be a gold Racine Reef piece awarded that evening to one lucky attendee.

If you are interested in a bus trip from Chicago to Door County and back I do need to hear from you ASAP in order to be able to get it worked out.

Costs:
Cruise only - $60
Regional dinner only - $37
Both the cruise and regional dinner: $85
Payment options will include check, PayPal and direct charge to your credit card

While payment will not be due until the July time frame, I do need to hear from you if you plan to attend so I can make appropriate arrangements. And, make your hotel reservations so you know you have a room.

For additional information you can call me at (765) 452-1602 from 9 AM – 8 PM Eastern or email me at lighthouse-events @ sbcglobal.net (take out the spaces).

Does that mean there won't be another regional in the home office area (Maine) this year?

Two regional events this year - Indianapolis and Door County. Signing event with Bill, Nancy & Kim at LHD as I recall, and some Cape Cod events but that's it.

Last years events were on the east coast. This years are in the Great Lakes area. Next years are west coast or gulf coast???

Re: Door County Regional - Aug 25, 2007 - 03/23/07 01:40 AM

I feel bad the Regionals are out of my reach but that's okay. Most of my vacation time is designated for the islands off the coast of New England during the summer months. Lorna and I love what we do with the boat and wouldn't trade it for vacations elsewhere.

The reservations are made and we will be there.

Talked to the person at the hotel in Ellison Bay yesterday. They had just gotten back the phone system after a lightning strike.

Remember this is when the custom quilt that the Hoosier Lighouse Club is raffling off will be given away. Buy your tickets now....you don't need to be present to win....but it would make it more fun if you were.

Out of curiosity, how many miles between these two locations? It seems funny that both Regionals would be in the Great Lakes area. Is this an area where Harbour Lights does better in sales than other areas?

Re: Door County Regional - Aug 25, 2007 - 03/25/07 07:41 PM

About 475 miles between the two, a good 8 hours drive with the burden of going thru Chicago at the mid-way point.

Regionals in the Midwest have always been well attended. Lots of collectors in the Midwest and you must remember that we have far more lighthouses in the Great Lakes than there are on the coasts.

Last year both regionals were on the east coast so this year it seemed fair to try the Great Lakes area. Besides, both event pieces this year are from the Great Lakes.

Is there still availability?

We've been considering going since we don't have any other lighthouse trips planned for 2007. But we'll miss the bunnies at the MN State Fair.

Hi Dave,
Is there still avialability at the hotel? If so what are the rates? I really want to try and make it just not sure it will be in the budget. We are just finishing our new house and close and move in in June.

Thanks,
Jessie

It's looking like there will be three Bradys at the Door County Regional.. Chloe will probably be joining Grandpaul and Nana Sue for the weekend.. It will be her first big lighthousing adventure..

Re: Door County Regional - Aug 25, 2007 - 07/16/07 08:19 PM

Very nice that Chloe will be joining you and Sue for her first major lighthousing trip, Paul.

There is still some room for participation even though the initial deadline has passed. The hotel has told me I can add to my initial list for another couple of weeks. If you need additional information please send me an email at lighthouse-events @ sbcglobal.net (take out the spaces)and I will send you back the detailed mailing. The hotel did still have some room available, but don't know how long that will last.

With Bill only doing ten events this year, and probably fewer next year, this may be one of his last visits to the Midwest area. And, we have the bonus of also having Harry join us. Come join us for a fun day of lighthousing with your collector family.

Just wanted to post a short message saying that Mindy and I made it home last night about 830 from our Door County trip! A good time was had by all and we met up with old friends and made some new ones. A BIG thank you to all who made this event happen especially Dave Hannum! We really enjoyed the boat cruise and dinner. Mindy even won a set of the new ornaments during dinner. We took a ton of pictures and we'll post them soon along with a trip report, unfortunately its back to work now!

I want to thank everyone that came out to visit the Pottawatomie Lighthouse on Saturday. Without all of you helping, it couldn't have been done in a decade. We're still not done, little by little, year by year we get closer to a complete museum. It went from a boarded up building to a beautiful museum. I just would like to personally thank everyone at:
Younger & Associates, Harbour Lights
Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival- Alpena,MI
Lighthouse Digest, Lighthouse Depot, WILD,
and all our Harbour Lights collector friends.
Thanks again and hope to see you on May 17, 2008
