Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 06/24/08 02:01 AM

Here's a note from Kim received today:

Quote:
On Friday Bill Younger went to the emergency room at Grossmont Hospital and was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. He was admitted to the intensive care unit where they stabilized him before they could operate.

This morning Bill underwent neural surgery and is now resting comfortably and is expected to make a full and complete recovery. Bill will remain in intensive care for a few more days. Please be aware that he can not receive flowers whilst in intensive care. I’ll keep you posted on Bill’s progress.

Kim
Harry says Bill is driving the ICU nurses crazy and is in good spirits, considering the "turban" he's wearing around his head.

Cards would be welcome to:

Patient Bill Younger
Sharp Grossmont Hospital
5555 Grossmont Center Drive
La Mesa, CA 91942

No flowers until he is out of ICU. No calls at this time.

Please keep Bill, Nancy and the Younger Family in your prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers are cetainly with the Younger family for a full recovery by Bill.

I know that this has changed Bill and Nancy's travel plans for this summer, but I am grateful that this happened before they began their travels, allowing Bill to benefit from the top notch medical care available in San Diego.

OH man, this is bad news! I don't know exactly what a subdural hematoma is, but I know that it ant good. And he looked so healthy just two weeks ago in New Orleans.

I will certainly keep Bill on my prayer list until he is out of the hospital and fully recovered.

Re: Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 06/24/08 03:16 AM

Subdural Hematoma: There are three membranes (dura) that surround your brain matter and exist to protect the brain from the inside of the skull. A hematoma is a blood clot from a burst blood vessel. This blood clot is within one or more of the dura layers. The clot is putting pressure on the brain.

The cause of a subdural hematoma is generally an accident. In older people it could be as simple as a bump on the head; symptoms such as a severe headache might come on slowly or quickly after the bump or accident. Prognosis is good if treated quickly. Sharp Grossmont is one of the highest rated hospitals in San Diego.

Gods Speed Bill. My thoughts and prayers are with the Younger family. We all know that Bill has the strength and courage to overcome this setback.

But, the nurses' are in for an experience they could only imagine considering Bill's great humor and sense of fun.

Best wishes from all of us, and thanks for many wonderful experiences.

To Bill and Family,

I'm so very sorry of hearing about your recent ordeal. But at least it's relatively pain-free. I know, because I had to undergo the a Subdural Hemotoma operation about five years ago.

You'll probably have to endure some type of rehabilatation. At least I did.

My prayers are with you each and every day. Don't worry -- you'll come through it all with flying colors.

PS. WATCH OUT FOR ALL THOSE PRETTY NURSES.

I just received this note from Harry:

Quote:
I’ve just been over to see Bill. He’s doing great. The poor nurses are being teased remorselessly, fortunately they all seem to have a sense of humor to match Bill’s. But, they’ve decided that its time to expel him from ICU so that they can get some rest.

Bill will be moved to another part of the hospital and is expected to be there until the end of the week.

I suggest that if anyone wants to send a card the best place to send it would be.

I received this update from Harry:

Quote:
The good news is that Bill has been sprung from the Hospital. He’s had all his tubes and funny hat removed and over all is doing much better, although he does sill have a headache. The doctors tell us it will be another week or so before he can resume is training for the San Diego marathon.

All the best,

Harry
I'm thinking we really need to add the family to our prayers since he is home . . . I can imagine that while the nurses at the hospital were sad to see Bill go home, they are glad that he is no longer their responsibility!

Great News! Bill & The Younger Family remain in my prayers.

I recall at the Portsmouth Regional a few years back, I gave Nancy a pillow that read "A Retired Husband is a Wife's Full Time Job!"

Now more than ever! But Nancy's Nursing background will come to the fore!

I just received this note from Harry:

Quote:
Bill asked me to pass on a big thank you to everyone for the kind wishes, wonderful cards and beautiful flowers. He really does appreciate them, they are spread all around him.

Late last week we really thought all Bill’s problems were behind him. He was feeling like his old self, but on Friday night he started to have a lot of pain in his side and after an MRI was found to have a pulmonary embolism. Fortunately it is not life threatening but very painful. So, Bill will be in hospital for another couple of days before we can spring him out.

All the best,

Harry
Please continue to keep Bill, Nancy and all the family in your thoughts and prayers.

Re: Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 07/16/08 08:02 PM

I just received this update from Harry:

Quote:
I’ve fallen behind on updating every one, sorry.

Bill was released from hospital, having been given all sorts of drugs to clear out the embolism from his lungs and was feeling very much better. The embolism was very painful.
However, two days later Bill felt the same pains come back and so was rushed, yet again to the hospital were it was found that he has several new, tiny, blood clots in his lungs and one of his legs. Fortunately this time they are not as painful as the first bout.

The treatment problem is that, because Bill was originally in the hospital for a bleed in his head the doctors were very reluctant to give him blood thinners, which is the primary treatment for a blood clot. However, the doctors believe that his head has had plenty of time to heal (I could add all sorts of son in law type jokes here but will show some restraint!!) and so a treatment of blood thinners has been started.

The good news is that this treatment is working very well. The bad news is that Bill is feeling good and is ready to get up and start moving around again, but the doctors are insisting he stay in hospital for a few more days so that they can keep a close eye on him.

Later this month Bill will have a very simple but clever operation to fix a tiny hole in his heart. Probably the cause of all these recent problems. The recovery from this will, we are told, be very fast. However the doctors insist that Bill must not fly for some time after the surgery and so sadly Bill has had to cancel his two August signing events.

All the best,

Harry
Please do continue to keep Bill, the family and the folks at the hospital in your prayers. Knowing Bill, I wonder if we should set up a pool to guess when they will have to resort to restraints to keep him in place . . . . Right now I think we are all much more concerned about getting him healthy than about cancelling signing events.

Re: Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 07/22/08 02:27 AM

Sue and I just got off of the phone after talking to Bill Younger, tonight. Bill wanted me to pass along his thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers. A direct quote was that he loves all you guys.

He was sounding really upbeat while still in the hospital for at least one more day. They told Bill they wanted him stabilized so he doesn't have to come back except for the surgery to plug a small hole in his heart which he has known about for a while. It is going to be performed as an out-patient procedure or at the most an overnight in the hospital.

He said he is feeling really good and is pain free and pain medicine free, which probably is one of the reasons he sounded so good to Sue and me.

Once again he sent his love and we sent it right back to him from all of us on the Forums, we didn't think anybody would mind us speaking for them..

The surgery is going to happen on August 20th which is a couple of days after his birthday.. I talked to him yesterday while we were at our club's picnic and everybody got the chance to wish him well when I put my phone on speaker. He said he would have much rather been with us at our picnic but was ready for the surgery...

Chloe Brady is visiting us for 5 days and she joined us in wishing Bill a Happy Birthday on the phone just now. Sue and Chloe sang Happy Birthday to Bill! His surgery has been moved back to the 27th, Bill said he is doing real well and looking forward to getting it behind him.. I think Chloe brightened Bill's day, I know she brightens mine when I talk to her on the phone, Birthday or not..

Sue and I talked to Bill the night before last and most of all he wanted me to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.. He said he is doing fine but he gets a little tired when he goes for a walk. He said the doctors said that will get better with some time and in fact he should feel better than he has for years..

He said he was to go back for a check-up today to see how he is recovering from the surgery..

Re: Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 09/07/08 08:02 PM

This is not the place for me to post this, but it follows suit with the last post above.

I have noticed that several people have referred to Cedar Point as a Reunion. Cedar Point was a Regional Event, NOT A REUNION. There hasn't been a Reunion since 2005 and I don't know if there will ever be one again. I'm hoping and praying that there will be! But when... we don't know!

Charles, I'm not picking on you, you are not the only one who has made this mistake! I'm just trying to clarify the difference.

Re: Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 09/08/08 12:51 PM

Good point, Steph! On the other hand, any gathering of HL collectors could easily be construed as a "reunion" of some sort.

Will there ever be another "official" reunion? Possibly, but maybe not likely. We really need a boost in HL sales and an increase in new collectors before that move would be considered. Times are tough for many people nowadays. Expendable cash is almost non-existent for many.

Re: Bill Younger Hospitalized; driving the nurses crazy... - 09/11/08 01:34 AM

Well, considering I came in on this late, and considering his age, Bill will probably stick with the massive regimen of meds and go strictly with his doctors' advice, but for anyone that is interested in treating/preventing blood clots naturally (as in no "rat poison"), nattokinase, which is extracted as a fermented substance from soybeans which works well (alone or in addition to other things) for that purpose (http://enzymeuniversity.com/artman/publish/article_140.shtml). (There's human research and usage also, just most you have to have an account to log-in and find the studies)

Glad he's doing better and hope he is on his road to recovery.
