HL curio mishap

HL curio mishap - 06/05/01 04:34 AM

Did you ever say to yourself, "Self, please be careful as you place these HLs on the curio shelf?"

While working in a new curio that was just delivered last Saturday, the shelf above the bottom shifted and then fell onto the base shelf, yes, there were lighthouses on the bottom shelf. Now, Cape St. George, SouthWest Reef, and Pensacola, LE need to go to the HL hospital. My feeling is still one of disbelief. Now, I am skeptical about working in the curio again...It is not defective, the shelf rest were askew and the weight of Pensacola tilted the shelf and it fell onto the bottom.

So, I am in the process of recovering from the experience and shopping for superglue tomorrow. Hope none of you ever have this happen to you. Then again, it could be worse.

I won't worry about resale, these are here until I die...but..but..but....

For once aren't you glad you didn't win a gold Cape St. George????? Lucky that you didn't have more lights on the shelf when it relocated.

I know the feeling and can empathize with you. I came close a few times when loading up my new curio. Also, I made sure that Navesink was on the middle shelf of the 8 because it is the only fully supported shelf, and the glass DOES DEFLECT UNDER THE WEIGHT! I've only chipped one of my lights so far, but it was like hurting an old friend, you never want to do it again!!

You friends are too much!

My husband was so nice and came rushing to my rescue...While I stood by with my mouth open and repeating "I knew this would happen one day", he went and got the flashlight and searched the carpet for any fragments he could find. Needless to say, I am very grateful that the whole curio was not loaded and one of the upper shelves decided to do the same thing.

John and Sean, your kindness overwhelmes me!!

Re: HL curio mishap - 06/05/01 12:52 PM

Derith, first of all my condolences on this unfortunate mini disaster. I must agree that the curio must be defective if a shelf can shift enough to dislodge from its mounts. If the shelf was placed properly in the curio it should fit in such a manner that only a severe overload would contribute to failure of the glass. Maybe you should post the brand and the model of the curio so others won't experience what happend to you.

Damage to a valued collectible is something I've never experienced except for one that was damaged in shipment and was returned for a replacement. I'm sure you are somewhat thankful that those HL's that were damaged are ones that are currently replaceable.

Bob (note: no smiley faces, events like this can be disheartening)

Derith,

I am sorry to hear about the accident. I can only imagine your horror as the shelf was falling and you couldn't stop it. It's sad that you had to go through breaking some pieces, but how heartwarming to find you have such wonderful friends on the forum. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Have grandtwins every once in a while and have always stressed how precious the lighthouses are. They have been told that they will inherit the sculptures and so far, they have understood and have steered clear.

Re: HL curio mishap - 06/05/01 11:32 PM

Well, I just tell them, "If you go near them, I'll kill you!" No seriously, the only problem so far is when some people, not necessarily "kids", have tried to do inappropriate things when in the same room, like tossing footballs, etc. That's what really gets me! The kids seem to know better!

Seems an "Amen" is in order. I am still overwhelmed and am saying "where else but among HL collectors would folks be so supportive!"

Re: HL curio mishap - 06/08/01 09:59 PM

Oh my Derith... I'm so sorry to hear of the mishap. I too have been a bit weary of some glass in a couple of my curios, so I ended up replacing them with a thicker glass.

I am really happy to hear you were able to get some replacements. A few good things have come out of this... it was confirmed that HL collectors, and particularly the Wackos, are some wonderful people; second, we all will probably begin looking at our curios, just in case!

Derith, I had read the chat logs and there were so many comments about your curio mishap I began searching for the whole story. My heart ached for you but as I read further that ache turned to admiration. Admiration for the wonderful friends that came forward to replace those lighthouses that were broken. It is so nice to belong to such a great group of friends that extend that friendship above and beyond. As I have said before, HL collectors are the best people.

Amen and Amen, Ruthie!

Two of the gifts have arrived and the third one is on the way. They will be the most prized HL pieces that are on display in my curios.

Blessed is how I term the friendships we all have made with HL Wackos here on the Forum. Can't wait to see many of them in Chicago on Friday! Travel safely, ya'll.
