Any Takers?

Any Takers? - 10/11/04 01:35 AM

It's been several months since I posted instructions on making glass cases for the Anchor Bays that Harbour Lights produced without them. Has anybody tried to make one. I know Bert was going to give it a try and even ordered the brass plate from me for the Eagle and the Nantucket. He's never said whether it was gong to happen right away or become a winter project. Hpefully someone has attempted one and will let us know how it turned out.

Rich,

I fully intend to attempt to make the glass cases. But my capabilities with craftsmanship are rather limited. So I figure that with inaccurate measurements, faulty cutting, breakage, bloody fingers, and parts of my body glued to my dining room table I would have spent $500 just to create a horrible mess. BUT I WILL TRY.

And yes, I'll let you know about the Brass Plates by tomorrow.

Rich,

I did check on ordering one from one of the local collectible stores and they cost more than the ship! Sure wish HL would have stayed with the display case. They are just too delicate to sit on a table or shelf.

July,

I actually tried to make one, but unfortunately it turned out to be a dismal failure. There MUST BE SOMEPLACE that would make the cases at a reasonable price. Does anyone know?

Bob/Judy,

What are you trying to make the case for? Is it the Relief or Nantucket? Is it the 41 foot, the Tybee or Rigid Hull Inflatable? Any of those has a simple answer that is a lot cheaper and better looking then buying from another source and that is buying a Chesapeake, Huron or Portsmouth off EBAY and using the glass case that come with them for the piece that you want to put in a glass case. Sell the left over Anchor Bay for whatever you can get and you have your problem solved. If you shop the local stores, or let your fingers do the walking, and find these Anchor Bays at 50% off you can pick up one for $75-$80 bucks and have a case. Sell the Anchor Bay for $25-$30 bucks and your case only cost you $50.00. You won't find an aftermarket case that looks good for that $50.00. The brass plate can be bought from me for $16.00 and for a total of $66.00 you have a case.

If it's for the George Cobb or Eagle you are either going to have to make one, buy one aftermarket or go without. They will not fit in the normal glass case because of their size. The normal base can be used if the ship is set at a 45 degree angle on the base but the glass case needs to be bigger.

What is the reason for not buying an existing ship and using the case from it for everything except the Cobb and Eagle? No one has ever told me and I've been doing it since the glass cases were deleted. I'd really be interested in knowing the reason. I have sold every uncased ship on the Forums for the $25-$30 to collectors that do not want the expense of the case and have an average of $55.00 in each case that was left. The expense is minimal if you sell the Anchor Bay at a reduced price and just keep the case. The only Anchor Bay that I have left to sell is the Motor Yaght Kim and that will eventually sell. It is an open edition version and only around 200 were made so I don't understand why it hasn't sold but that is another story. I bought the Kim to use the case for the Rigid Hull Inflatable because of it's smaller size.

Let me know your reasons and maybe I can convince you to take this avenue rather the aftermarket or no case at all.

That is a great idea, Rich. In fact I will check locally before I try Ebay. Makes sense to me.
Thanks for your great suggestion.

Bill and Judy,

If you buy the ship with the case and you need a brass plate, my offer is still good to have you one made for the ship that you are going to display. It comes with a replicated Anchor Bay Emblem and look about 90% like the originals that come with the ships. The cost is $16.00 mailed to you. It takes about 3 weeks to turn everything around from the time you send me a money order. If interested let me know.

Thanks. We'll definitely want to order the plates once we get the glass cases.
