Hey Digger - looks like you are on the 'dark side' of the Mackinaw!! That 'red' looks like maroon.

Well... I guess I've got to see her. The white beauty of the Cutter Mackinaw was a fond memory of the start of the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Island Bayview Yacht Club race in my Port Huron youth.

It was always my grand dream of somehow riding along on the Mackinaw as it tailed the sailors north through Lake Huron.

It would be a shame IMO if the Mackinaw doesn't end up at it's home port of Cheboygan MI or nearby, perhaps as part of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Museum.

Hey John - I remember the white Mackinaw better myself. My wife got to ride her for the start of the race in 1972, nine months pregnant with our first, Made the corpsman's day having to watch her. I was too busy patrolling the Black River with a 17' patrol boat. The good old days.

I also remember Cheboygan giving her skipper a ticket for discharging sewage a couple of years prior to that. It was just before the CG secured their overboard discharges. The CG paid the entire crew in silver dollars so Cheboygan would realize the effect the Mackinaw dollars had on the community. They also paid the fine, but made their point. Oh yeah, the good old days.

Is there any significance to the color change from white to red? White is easier to spot on the open water. Is this something new the USCG is going to do to some of their other ships? Let's hear it from a Coastie out there...

Sean explained to me some time back when the Mackinaw color change was brought up that icebreakers are painted red, cutters white, ATN black as I recall it (correct me if I'm wrong Sean).

The Mackinaw was called a 'Cutter', but it's role is an ice-breaker for the Upper Great Lakes.
