Monomoy Point at last - 03/05/02 09:34 PM

My Monomy Point arrived yesterday and I went to pick it up last night. BobM, you were right it is definitely a keeper. Very well done. As a bonus, Highland (GLOW) was also in and LLOM Nobska and Stonington Harbor. All in all a very pleasant trip to my dealer.

Long wait but definitely worth it.

It is nice, isn't it. Harbour Lights continues to keep their collectors happy with awesome new releases! They just keep getting better and better.

Monomy is a nice piece, but those strings representing the wires make me nervous. They look great now, but elastic stuff seems to decay pretty quickly over time. I have visions of four broken wires in five years...

They worry me a bit also. With all the packing material that came with this light it seems as though another material could have been used along with a warning on how to grasp the light when removing it. But then it probably wouldn't have worked as some folks would just grab it and bend the supports. If not at first, at a later time.

This piece interested me when I saw it online. However, when I saw it in person, I was immediately turned off by it. It all had to do with those elastic "wires."

To me they looked kind of cheap. They were not straight, and looked like they had been stretched already. Like Hanifich, I had visions of the elastic cracking and breaking after a few years. Or even having it stretch and sag. Neither one of those thoughts pleased me. I would have liked to have seen something else used. So, I elected to pass on this one.

Instead, I actually purchased the new Cape Hatteras GLOW. This is a piece that was well done (In my mind), and goes well with my Hatteras on the move piece.

I have to disagree with the assessments of Monomoy Point. I feel this is a fabulous HL showing ingenuity not seen before.

Will the elastic dry out and break in years to come? Maybe, maybe not. If it does it will probably look more like the actual light.

Has anyone seen a broken elastic on Monomoy Point yet? I would guess not. Hopefully, with a little extra care your Monomoy Point will look like new for many years to come.

Bob, are those supports still there? Not too many pictures of this light on the web.

There are there in this photo which is a bit fuzzy.

Interesting photos here showing 1st supports, later supports and no supports.

I just got signed up to be on auto-ship, and Monomoy and Rock Of Ages are in the mail. In the meantime, while in SW Michigan last weekend I saw Monomoy at a store, and was very impressed, however I didn't do a close exam of it. I think, however, that I'll be real pleased with it.

To those worried about how long the elastic strings will last, please keep in mind that this is a 'display' item, not intended to be played with like a damn football.

Kim says they'll have spare elastic strings around -- just in case you can't hold yourself back and need to toss a long one to your spouse.

Football John? No way, though maybe we could strum a tune on it...."By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea..."

Hey Mombo, ...I really don't know if the supports are still in place. I would guess that they are gone by now. I really have no idea what shape the light is in at the present time. Maybe this summer I'll take "It's Only Money" up to Chatham and try to get a few pics of the light to share.

I also am very well pleased with my Monmoy Point. I believe that properly displayed and handled when dusting and cleaning, the bands should remain there for many years.

It's funny you should mention Stage Harbor Light, Weezie. I was down there this winter and took some pics. One of them was in the recent photo contest but didn't make the cut.

Harbour Lights has never made a sculpture with the Lantern Room removed permenantly. We do have Long Beach Bar Light being assembled, but I don't know how big a seller Stage Harbor would be nationwide. I live in Massachusetts and never heard of it or saw it until I did a little research on Massachusetts Lights.

If they make it, I will buy it, but I wouldn't expect it to be a big seller. Maybe I'm wrong but....

What about Matinicus Rock, ME? OK, maybe since one tower has a lantern room and one does not, it doesn't count.

You got me on that one, Laurie! I forgot about Manticus Rock. But we'll have to split that because one of the towers does have a lantern room on it.

Congrats on being so observant!

Bob, As you probably know now....Monomoy isn't really that far from Stage Harbour Light. I think anyone who grew up in or vacationed in Chatham knows of Stage Harbour Light. Stage Harbour Light is located at the end of a popular summer beach (Hardings Beach). All the lights on Cape Cod hold a special place in my heart for me! I hope to see Stage Harbour someday!

Re: Monomoy Point at last - 03/18/02 06:22 AM

I asked Bill once about Matinicus Rock, why they had made it with the one lantern room gone. Can't remember his exact answer, just that that was how it looked during the time frame they wanted to depict. As far as Stage Harbor, or any other lighthouse that has changed significantly, I guess it's up to HL as to what time period they represent. If they can put the keepers back on lights that have lost them, they could certainly put a lantern room back!
