Southwest Reef - Society Gift

Posted By: LamarB

Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/23/00 03:31 AM

I received my Collector's Society gifts today. Southwest Reef is outstanding. The level of detail is a wonder to behold, from the intricate railings to the spider legs, to each individual rivet in the steel plates.

The Society pin is beautiful. The Mark Sherman water color is beautiful.

Even the shipping box is beautiful!

I'm sure that because it's from my state and I've visited it fairly recently that I'm biased.

That being said, it really is a beautiful sculpture.

Thank you HL for another smash hit IMO.

But Lamar, did you really like Southwest Reef?

Thanks for the reminder. I've been so busy lately that I forgot to renew my HLCS membership. Maybe I'll get a chance to do that later today.

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/23/00 03:12 PM

I just renewed last week, so I'm anxiously awaiting Southwest Reef and Boca Grande. I have wanted HL to produce Boca Grande for quite some time and I think it looks fantastic from the picture on the bounty page that was sent out last month.

Thanks for a wonderful review, Lamar! Looking forward to receiving this one. I liked the pictures that I've seen and I've been wondering if they had been shipped yet. Your post answered that question for me. Thanks again.

Southwest Reef is an excellent example of one of the smaller, unique lights that compliment the more traditional, heavyweights in our collection. Good job, those spider legs are really great. Now if it had only been red like I thought it was going to be!

Sue,

For those of us who are less informed (and partly color blind), please "clarify" your comment:

"Now if it had only been red like I thought it was going to be!"

Thanks,

Mine's RED. What color is yours mombo?

I agree Lamar, I thought mine was red too! I'll have to recheck tonight? Those spider legs are BY's favorite screwpiles.

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/24/00 11:10 PM

Mombo, do you mean it is not as bright a red color as Paul's HL catalog photo?

I know mine is red in color, but not a bright red. It is almost a faded or oxidized red color. I am guessing that is what you are refering to.

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/25/00 03:09 AM

I would say it is similar in color to Ship John Shoal and American Shoal, kind of rusty red. I was hoping for a brighter red.

Leave it to Mombo to get everyone going on what shade of red Southwest Reef is. Such an agitator.

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/25/00 09:13 PM

Hey Sean... could the color be that which you and I have were accustomed to at one time in the USCG... such as red lead? Shades of the past! LOL

I finally got my "butt" in gear and renewed my HLCS membership. I was told my gift, etc., would be shipped towards the end of June. Once again, thanks for the reminder!

I recieved my package earlier today and I am also very pleased with all of the items that were in it. SW Reef will never be one of my favorites, but it is done very well. I agree that both the pin and picture are fabulous. Dennis

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/31/00 04:14 AM

Got my Southwest Reef today, and while it may not be "fire engine" red, it's definitely red. It's a very handsome piece and more than worth the price -- a screwpile lighthouse with great detail (i.e. rivets in the steel plate sides) as a gift. What a great outfit HL is.
Lamar, tell us again how you really feel about this piece.

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 05/31/00 06:01 PM

So, Friday, May 26, was a horrible day for me - a real estate transaction I was working on blew up. I was furious at my buyers who put a wonder seller through torture - it was ugly! (Awright, already, Firstmate, get to the point!) [OK] So I get home to my darling husband who was preparing a special dinner of Copper River Salmon for me, (Firstmate!!) [All right - I'm getting there] and at the door he hands me my Society box from Harbour Lights! What joy!!!!

Beautiful Southwest Reef and the 2000 Society pin just melted my aggravation away! Thank you, Harbour Lights, you saved my day!

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 06/07/00 09:20 AM

My Southwest Reef arrived today. I just picked up an American Shoal Saturday and Tuesday I got my Boca Grande and Seven Foot Knoll ornament. Oh yes, the Cape henlopen that I ordered came in too! Big groan from my allowance savings!!!I don't know if I can handle all this excitement- still trying to find all of the seahorses too.

The last month at work has been particularly stressful for me- too many details to discuss here- and these lights are finally something for me to be excited about!

Yes, good things come in three's. On Tuesday I received my Fort Jeff, on Wednesday my Boca Grande came in and today my SW Reef arrived in the mail. Another great gift from the HL folks. Had to shuffle stuff around to make room, but then there is always room somewhere for a HL.

We received our SW Reef today, as well as pin. All are wonderful and have proudly displayed them with the rest! Another wonderful piece that HL has created.

Still haven't received my Southwest Reef yet. But I am getting a little excited, it seems that they are trickling in pretty quick.

I haven't received my Society Package for this year yet. I'm looking forward to receiving it this month. I was a little late with my renewal this year. Time just seems to be flying by for some reason.

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 06/11/00 05:13 PM

...the "detail" with Southwest Reef is exquisite. In my job I do alot of steel-detailing and this little "light" is full of it right down to the tapered-outriggers located under the walkway. The rivit-pattern and railings, as well as the 4-square beams and steel connectors are just so realistic and correct. I'm impressed....Thanks HL....another superb piece for my collection!!

....love that little dingy, too....

Re: Southwest Reef - Society Gift - 06/22/00 05:16 AM

Finally got mine yesterday. What a great looking piece. Glad they changed the color to that rusty red, according to the history on this it used to be black! Man, I bet it was like an oven in there for the lightkeepers..

Got mine yesterday also. I love this little piece with all of it's finely detailed rivets and rusty brown color. I'm so glad HL found a way to produce skeleton and screw pile towers, the craftmanship is second to none.

Okay you guys, where is the shipment headed to my house? I know I paid my dues...the mule train must have taken a detour into the Grand Canyon on the way to FL. When will it arrive? Today, tomorrow? with mules you just never ever know.

Hang in there Derith. My SW Reef arrived on Tuesday and I was extremely impressed by it.

Now I'm really looking forward to Boca Grande coming in. I already have a space reserved for that one.

No Doc John, they don't. It's now owned and maintained by the City of Berwick, Louisiana. I've spoken to the City Manager several times about it and their fledgling Lighthouse Park (where SW Reef now resides). He's told me they have adequate funds to maintain it.
