The magazine is called Collectors Edition. If anyone has seen it,would love to know your opinion. If you haven't,rush on over to the local magazine stand or store and take a gander at this fantastic piece.HL has gone all out for this and it will be a big seller. The article says it will be on sale from january 1st until dec.31st.What a magnificent work of art!! Let me know what your feelings are!

Well Bob - everyone's suspicions are FINALLY CONFIRMED. Mail men and women actually do read the magazines. OK so they glance at the covers.

In this part of the country, I've never been able to find Collectors Edition on newstands. Perhaps someone who subscribes can scan the cover for us. I should have a photo of the piece in the next few days.

Thanks for this great news!

Thanks for that confirmation, Bob. I had no idea that Eddystone was going to be the 10th Anniversary HL. As a matter of fact, I don't have an idea where Eddystone is or what it looks like. I hope someone will share a photo with us soon.

Here's a link to Eddystone. Looks like there were five different Eddystone lights. Oldest one was 1698. Which one will it be?

We subscribe to Collector's Edition Magazine, but haven't received the current issue.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/17/00 06:49 AM

The talk at last week's chat covered much of this. I guessed Eddystone Light, which is coorect. The discussion was which of its' incarnations would be the light. Since we were given a suggestion that both the light and its' builder fell down, the presumption is that the light is Second Eddystone Light built by Henry Winstanley. This will have to be a most unusual HL with all the "add ons".

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/17/00 11:01 PM

Just got home from work and the November 2000 edition of Collector Editions was in the mailbox. I would love to scan the cover and post it here, but Tom has completely rearranged the computer room and he didn't reconnect the scanner. Will scan and post later this evening if no one else has.

In the article, there is a reference to HLs first ever "Lighthouse Day Celebration Piece: The St. Helena". This piece depicts the pre-renovation on one side and the post-renovation on the other. No picture of this one but it might be this light...

We'll have a closeup look at Eddystone Light during the chat Wednesday night starting at 9 PM Eastern Time.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/18/00 06:04 AM

Kinda looks like something Rube Goldberg would have built. If you look at the picture I linked to yesterday, you could almost overlay the magazine cover. Boy will this be a tricky one to ship with all the do-dads. It will be a most interesting piece to add to the collection. Thanks for the post, Tom & Joyce.

I think this is going to be a Double WOW piece. What a wonderful way to celebrate the 10th anniversary and begin the next decade!
Thanks for sharing the picture.

This light looks like it's straight out of that water town in Waterworld.
Can't wait to see the packing on this one. You'll need instructions just to rebox it!

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/18/00 02:33 PM

You got that right Dave. With all those "do-dads" could we have another CH1 on our hands in that, the possible breakage factor during shipment could create an early retirement? In any case, it's an incredible looking piece. Kinda looks like a combination lighthouse, bird house, and gazebo. It's going to be quite a conversational piece, and will look great in the curio. I wonder how tall it will be?

Looks very nice and very similar to Gavin Fifield's (British sculptor) version from a few years back...wonder how limited it will be?

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/18/00 05:44 PM

I sure hope it looks a lot better than that, Rock. I suspect the only resemblance is that they are both based on the Eddystone lighthouse that Henry Winstanley both built and died in.

When I was young, my mother used to sing a song called "My Father was the Keeper of the Eddystone Light" a somewhat ribald folk song. So I'll definitely need Eddystone in my collection!

To be honest my view of it - ugly. I sure hope it's better in person. I'm disappointed. It's reminds me of Legos gone haywire.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/19/00 06:03 PM

Beauty is in the eye of tbe heholder, of course. That's not a criticism of anyone's comments; just that when you say "tree" the kind of tree we each visualize can vary widely.

And one's first reaction to this piece is that it "looks like no lighthouse I ever saw." In last night's chat I asked who in the chat room had ever seen an image of Eddystone Light before the past week. The vast majority said they had not.

And so when you see Eddystone by Harbour Lights for the first time, it's hard to get around how really different this is from any other lighthouse they ever made -- heck, very different from any lighthouse there had been before that.

In some ways, over 300 years ago Winstanley created the modern vision of what a lighthouse would look like. Take away the hoists, the covered outside walkway, the flag and flagpole. and the various kinds of blocks and bricks used in the contruction and you start to see what Minot's Ledge looks like.

Eccentric looking? Yep. But that was Winstanley, according to the history.

Weird? Yep.

Fanciful? Nope. It was a real lighthouse.

Whatever it is it really is. That is, this isn't a 'whimsical' idea of what a lighthouse might be as designed by D56 (several in the chat noted that).

It's a real lighthouse - one that no longer stands, of course, but as close as we can know it from the drawings.

If you choose to buy it, it will be one you'll have to be able to 'explain' to those who see it in your collection. So you'll have to brush up on the history.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/19/00 07:17 PM

I personally like the piece in an ecletic sort of way. I look forward to purchasing one for my curio when they come available. John, thanks again for the photo of Eddystone in last nights chat.

One thing I have learned over the years from traveling around this world... We Americans tend to judge other countries in accordance to what we think is right. Basically, our standards, our way of doing things. Now, before anyone goes off half-cocked and starts to e-mail me, or writes a rebuttal post, my post has nothing to do with what anyone has had to say here. Considering our country is fairly new (as compared to the U.K.) our view of what a lighthouse should look like can be 180 degrees out from other countries. Eddystone a bit different... you bet! Will I purchase the piece... you can count on it. Harbour Lights... thanks again for doing a great job!

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/19/00 07:21 PM

I know John, I know, I'm trying. I know it was a real lighthouse but it reminds me of the old saying that when you're going to a dinner party, get dressed, put on your jewelry, then take one thing off and you're ready. It looks like it needed to have a few things taken off. I'm sure I'll get used to it and appreciate it for what it represents.

But it might take a while.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/19/00 07:56 PM

I agree with tim that as Americans we judge things elsewhere by our standards. If it does not look like what we are used to at home we consider it suspect.

Yes this is a replica of a real lighthouse, but it will take some getting used to. I think it's as much the many colors as it is the design. As John points out it's basically similar to many others. It's the extras tha throw off the eyes.

There are many other lights out there in the big bad world that look different than what we think of as a lighthouse. this one is just out a little further than most.

I'll buy it and place it near to the Statue of Liberty and ask people which one was a real lighthouse and see their responses. Most are unaware of Liberty's service.

I'll make one perdiction- it won't sell anywhere as many as the millenium Piece (LETW). That number will stand for quite some time.

Dennis

Interesting looking piece. I've seen drawings of it before and I read an in-depth history of it and its construction several years ago. The history is fascinating!

I'm still waiting for the darned Pharos collection to surface somewhere. If this piece follows the same schedule, we might not see any on shelves until a year from now.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/19/00 10:32 PM

While this piece looks like a Rube Goldberg creation, the important criteria is accuracy, HL's strong point. While I'll never like it as much as a lighthouse such as Split Rock, its historic significance combined with its uniqueness will make it a must for me!
I was surprised Pharos wasn't the anniversary piece. I'm guessing that the archeologists haven't uncovered enough details yet for HL to make a piece which is historically accurate vs. based on speculation.

Re: Have you seen it???? - 10/20/00 12:35 AM

I like it . . . a lot! I'm not sure if that's in spite of, or because of, its excentricities. Probably the latter. I've long been a fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy literature, and this lighthouse looks like it could have been designed by J.R.R.Tolkien himself. But better yet, it really existed.

Even those who don't care for its appearance should admire the craftsmanship in this piece. My own favorite HL's are the more recent ones that are as much constructions as they are sculptures: The screwpiles, the open-frame towers, and those with pilings, open decks, and railings like Boca Grande. Eddystone carries that approach to a new high, with an incredible amount of detail!

I don't buy 'em all, not even most of 'em, but I will get this one.

I do have a question for someone less ignorant of British history that I am: Is the flag an early national flag of England, preceding the Union Jack?

Well we got a discussion of Mr. Winstanley's Folly going good.

But I'm surprised there weren't any comments about the 10 year anniversary logo. So what's everyone think?

Hmmm, This contraption looks like a invention of the professor from Chitty Chitty bang bang, but I like it !

P.S. does it have a knife, cork screw, bottle opener, tweezers, screw driver and other items that unfold open out of it ?
