What Would YOU Like To See for 2006-2007 Society? - 07/26/05 08:42 PM

I was talking to Harry Hine today and he asked for input from collectors as to what you would like to see for the 2006-2007 Collectors Society gift and exclusives.

Here's your chance to have some input.

The criteria: The two lighthouses need to have something in common.

It doesn't need to be a 'then and now' or a location even (front and rear range). It might be a designer or a builder, or a keeper or they were both involved in some historic event.

Put your thinking caps on and do some research, then post your ideas here.

Comments on the posts of others are always welcome, too.

Well, not being a lighthouse afficienado (did I spell that right??), the first two that come to mind are East and West Chop that you split taking the ferry to Mahhhhtha's Vinyihd. laugh

For those not familiar with the two:

Any of the ones left from the Hudson River lights, i.e., Rockland Lake and Stony Point. They've done six already--Esopus Meadows, Hudson-Athens, Jeffrey's Hook, Rondout II, Saugerties, and Tarrytown.

As a "way-out" suggestion- The First Baptist Church (rear range) and Hospital Point in Beverly Mass. (naturally). Frank Carbone NELL

The society gift should be something from the Great Lakes, since that's one area of the country that we haven't seen a society gift from yet. ( I know Port Sanilac was an exclusive, but that was many, many years ago)

How about Port Washington WI pier light as the society gift amd the Port Washington WI land light as the exclusive!

I must it is nice of Harry to entertain suggestions from CF members. It gives us the opportunity to participate in what future purchases we may buy. This is a great opportunity for "connected collectors."

I have no specific lights to nominate at this time, but I will give it some serious thought and come up with something when I return from my next vacation.

That's neat! Harry's always up for a Challenge.
I've got two that make sense to me.

Orient Point 1899 and Plum Island 1869 . The lighthouses face each other across Plum Gut at the entrance to Orient Point for the ferry from New London. Plum Island's cliff erosion has been stabilized this past summer with riprock, and there is hope for the Coast Guard to relight it in the near future after the lantern room is redone. Both these lights are very important to the boaters and fishermen as they navigate Plum Gut.

Eaton\'s Neck 1799 is the Coast Guard lighthouse in Huntington Harbor across from Huntington Harbor lighthouse. I'm hoping that Harbour Lights has Huntington Harbour Lighthouse 1912 on their schedule for a 2006 release so the sister lighthouse for this pair would be Lloyd Harbor Lighthouse 1854 which has be destroyed by a fire in 1947 but still represents it's post with it's ruins.

That is great that Harry is asking us for input. I still want a bottle light for my collection! I know Dunkirk and Buffalo lights have been done and they are the only ones I know of with a bottle light near by.

Steve's suggestion of East Chop and West Chop is a good one.

We'll have to think about this one.

I'm behind either the Chops or the Plum Gut Lights. Both are lights that are very special to us - me and my dad have both sailed by them many times (me only the Plum Gut Lights, him both). If these were the exclusives, then I would consider joining for a year to obtain them.

What about White Island (near Isle of Shoals) and have a portion of the proceeds go to the resoration. The connection with another lighthouse could be one that is hurting for restoration money as well?

Any ideas?

I'd like to see "Pomham Rocks" in RHode Island and it's nearby companion "Fuller Rocks" light which was most likely tended by the same keeper. Fuller Rocks and Sassafras Point are two very neat looking lights that were very short. The three that I've mentioned were the three furthest lights up into Narragansett Bay.

Could pair First Baptist church with
St. Philips Church(Charleston SC.) Both church lighthouses (St. Philips was rear range to Ft. Sumter).
I also like the suggestion of Sapalo Front Range and Rear Range lights.
And Savannah Texas Tower and Cumberland.

I'll put my vote in for the Saginaw River Rear Range Light, which is currently (still, slowly but surely)undergoing restoration, and the Saginaw River Front Range Light (no longer standing).

These were the first range lights in the United States and would be a great pair for the Collector's Society.

I strongly agree with Mike (CanaFan) and Paul (WackoPaul) regarding the Port Washington, WI lights.

However, I would also like to mention any of the Kennebec River lights in MAINE: Doubling Point, Squirrel Point, and Perkins Island, as a fine runner up.

I have mentioned all of these lights in the past and would love to finally see them become part of the HL lighthouse line!
