Cape Arago, OR - 11/18/05 11:18 PM

Since this is prob the last LE Oregon light we will get from HL (barring a "Gone But Not Forgotten" version of Pt. Adams), I just wanted to give praise where I felt it was due...picked up my Cape Arago #124 the other day and placed it in its spot in my curio among my other Oregon lights, and must say it is a terrific little piece...no frills, bells, or whistles, just a sturdy little sleeper with a nice low edition number...thanks HL!

I agree entirely. But you mean that you're actually glad that they didn't include a little recording of the sea lions and the fog horns, let alone lighting it?

Now, I can lay aside my Scaasis rendition of it. You don't think that HL will do a LE of 'Cleft in the Rocks' or a "Gone-But-Not-Forgotten" version of 'Desdemona Sound?' Are you dashing my hopes against the proverbial rocks? eek

Well a nice big wild wave splashing up against the side of the rocks would've been nice but I'll take what we got...us Oregon fans can only hope for others, such as Desdemona Sands but, in the meantime Danny, don't ever say that "S" word around here again...EWWWW... eek

But I HAD to get the "S" version at the time because, as a passionate Oregonophile, I wanted to have something for a place holder, since it was the missing light of the set. As I mentioned in another, earlier thread, I was told---at one point in time---by Harbour Lights that there would be no Arago because of the controversy surrounding the Indian burial grounds.

Now...wanna buy the "S" version.....cheap? laugh

E-GADS, NO! I wouldn't take it if you gave it to me! I received the "S" version of Tillamook when I bought a piece of the rock for my ashes and, like Superman next to Kryptonite, cringed and discarded it...they are just awful...

And are you entirely sure that your ashes will not be placed in little receptacles, made by "S", in the form of little Tillamooks, with little lids using the lantern as a handle?

Truly diabolical, Danny.

Now that's scary! Seriously though Danny, did you happen to stop at Shore Acres State Park when you saw Arago? Quite a place there!

Re: Cape Arago, OR - 11/20/05 11:14 PM

I wanted to get to Shore Acres and the beautiful gardens there [not for nothing have I subscribed to 'Oregon Coast' for 19 years, now!], but just never had quite enough time to work it in. My usual coastal routine was to land in Portland, stay there for 2 or 3 days, then linger at Cannon Beach for 3 days, Depoe Bay for 2 or 3, Yachats for 3 days, sometimess Bandon for a day, and then Port Orford for 3 days, including a couple of drives on down to the California state line. Then, I would work my way back up the coast on the reverse schedule. For all the years that I went to Oregon, I couldn't tear myself away from the coast long enough to see Crater Lake. I did lavish time in the Gorge, of course. I'm heavily "into" ferns and waterfalls! Did get to Silver Falls State Park, too. But mostly, I had to stay by the sea. I lost time at Arago, too, just trying to find it the first time. I was due at my motel in Port Orford, and followed the ill-advice to take the Seven Devils road to Bandon...because it was shorter??? Maybe...but interminable and dull. I should have stayed on 101 and gotten to Bandon more quickly. At any rate, the last time I was at Bandon, I spent about 14 hours, over a day and a half, at the Coquille lighthouse, taking photos from every angle and making measurements. I haven't been able to get back to Oregon since 1998 due to family circumstances, very sad to say. Thank heavens I have a razor sharp memory and a freighter full of photographs!
