Waterfalls anyone?

Waterfalls anyone? - 02/29/04 05:47 AM

Anyone like waterfalls? I visited two in our city today, just to take pictures of how they look in the winter. What do you think?

This is Cascadilla Falls.

And this is Taughannock Falls, the highest falls this side of the Rockies (we are looking down on them from an overlook).

Extremely interesting pics, Eskilady! I'm surprised the moving water would freeze like that. It must have been really cold.

It made me think back of a brook in my town called the Scotch Brook. Strangely enough, the Scotch Brook use to freeze from the bottom up in the coldest of winters. Ice would form on the bottom and the water would continue to run over the top of the ice. Eventually it forced water and ice to overflow its banks. Kind of weird but true.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Very nice photos Carol! I like the way you framed them up for us. smile

Well, it's cold up this way but not nearly as cold as it has been and you'll note that the sun is shining brightly. We've had a string of nice sunny days, which is kind of rare also. Even with the sun and warmer temps it's going to be some time before all our ice and snow melts with the extreme winter we've had.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Carol. They look beautiful in the winter setting.

As much as I don't like being cold, a few years ago John and I went snowmobiling in Yellowstone park. It is quite an experience seeing Old Faithful and the other geysers in winter. One of our favorite things we did was snowmobile out to the Lower Falls. They drop 308 feet. cool

Carol,

The Falls in Ithaca look great. I'd only seen them in the Summer. It was a little different.

The water flow on Taughannock Falls was so low that we could walk in the stream almost right up to the falls. I believe it was in August (definitely Summer, though)

Here's a photo of the falls in Chagrin Falls, OH that I took last year while doing some Lighthousing in Ohio.

Those people in the picture are my wife Esther on the right and my Sister-in-Law Carol on the left.

Take my word for it.

Itis amazing how the falls do freeze - you can't tell from my pictures but they are not completely frozen. There is some running water still, mainly right down the middle. IF the sun stays shining as brightly as it has been, they will probably thaw out quickly. I am looking forward to spring!! I need to go lighthousing!!

Great photos!

The Penroses, who wrote the Great Lakes lighthouse bibles, also have a book on MI waterfalls. I don't own it, but the Amazon "look inside" seems good. Same format as the LH books. A waterfall afficianado might like it.

Bob, do you think the name of that brook had anything to do with it? Was the water on the rocks? wink laugh

Eskilady,

Very nice!

We went to the North Shore in Minnesota the first and third weekends in February. I wanted to stop at Gooseberry Falls and Tettagouche State park. I have never seen the falls during the winter. We didn't have time because we spent too much time at Split Rock. Seeing your photos makes me wish we had a chance. Maybe next year.

Thanks for sharing!

This is a good book to have if you are searching for Michigan Waterfalls. Most of these waterfalls are in the UP.

There is also a book on Wisconsin Waterfalls: Wisconsin Waterfalls: A Touring Guide by Patrick Lisi

I took this photo of Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's UP on October 14, 2002. It had snowed that morning.

Suzanne,

I was in the UP the fall of 2002. I took a photo of Tahquamenon Falls in early October that is similar to yours. Your photo has a little more fall color though... So, you probably were there after I was. Wonder what it looks like in the winter.

We were at the TQ falls in Oct. 2002, also. We took some decent shots, but not as good colors as Suzannes. Our main focus of the trip was Crisp Point.

As an added note if you have/use the Delorme single state maps/atlas's they also have waterfalls marked on the maps. the Michigan map has 167 waterfall's listed, but only 7 for Wisconsin. But they do list location and directions in the directory part. Delorme also lists lighthouses (in most) lighthouses states although once again not a complete list for WI. If your not using Deloreme maps they are great maps for lighthousing and vacation as they are very detailed, I have 8 maps now, about $20.00 a piece but worth every penny of it.

Tammy & Bud - I was there after the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival in Alpena. This photo was taken on Monday October 14th. It had snowed that morning! We went to Crisp Point after going to the falls.

Mark - I have to agree with you, the Delorme Gazetteers are well worth the money!

Re: Waterfalls anyone? - 03/01/04 11:50 PM

I had my son walk back to the falls with me today so I could get a better shot of them. It is about 3/4 of a mile down and 3/4 of a mile back - I am glad that I wore my big pink boots as it was mostly mud and ice and snow. It sure was worth it tho and I am glad that my son would go with me. Here are the results:

The mist is coming up from the water that is still flowing from underneath the "awning". It is beautiful and you wouldn't believe all the footprints right up to the falls itself!! eek How come its not as crisp and clear as the other one? It looks rather blurry.

Re: Waterfalls anyone? - 03/02/04 02:36 AM

It was darker down below? Also if you had the same sun as we did Carol it was more hazy than the day of your previous photo. Don't see the blue sky in this last one.

You should have had your son take a picture of you in those pink boots for us! laugh

(I think I have similar ones, except they're bright blue. We'd make quite a pair (no pun intended! wink )

Re: Waterfalls anyone? - 03/03/04 05:35 PM

Yesterday, I happened to be riding up Provo Canyon with my husband to go to a business appointment. As we were driving up the canyon I suddenly thought of the Bridal Veil Falls waterfall. We happened to have the camera in the car so I had him stop for some quick pictures.

This waterfall can be seen from the main road. It is a double waterfall and drops over 600 feet.

In the winter, ice climbers from all over the world come climb the side of the falls. It has been named "Stairway to Heaven".

So, what do they call it when you fall? eek

WOW!! I thought that my pictures of my falls were pretty good but your's really puts mine to shame! Mine look small next to yours! They are fantastic!! And you pass these quite often? How I would love to see them in person. One of these days my dreams will come true - when I win the lottery! wink

In the previous pictures, you had about an equal about of dark rock and white ice/snow. In the latest one, the white ice and snow makes up about 75% of the image. Your built in light meter was 'fooled' into thinking that the image was 'too bright' and needed to be 'stopped down'.

Some cameras have the ability to allow you to frame your picture, hold the shutter button down and then reframe the picture. This allows you to select an area that is about equal in black rocks and shows vs. white snow or ice for exposure purposes, then reframe your picture while holding down the button and finish pushing down on the shutter button.

Alternatively, some cameras allow you to adjust the exposure + or - by from 1/3rd to 2 full stops. When you encounter the kind of image in the latter picture, which should you do? (+1 stop or -1 stop)? Since you want to 'lighten' the image, you were open up one stop '+1' Some cameras allow you to take a series of images each one at a different f-stop. This is called 'bracketing'.

Finally, some point and shoot cameras have adjustment settings for snow or bright beach scenes.

Similar kinds of 'too much white' images occur with surf and sand and while snow skiing.
