White Christmas?

White Christmas? - 12/26/02 05:19 AM

Who had a White Christmas? We did. The weather here was bizarre.

We had about an inch of snow last night, followed by rain, which became VERY heavy. It suddenly turned to heavy snow at around 10am. By about 1pm, I was shovelling 5 inches of the white stuff out of my driveway, so our guests (who arrived at 10) could leave. I was cussing Bing Crosby the whole time. Him and his darn dreaming......

What made the weather so bizarre was, at my sister's (a mile from my house), they never got any rain (we had torrential rain). They had snow the whole time. My brother (who lives about 10 miles away), got a dusting of snow and all the rest rain. Weird....

We had snow starting at about 6 or so Christmas Eve. By 10:30 when we left for church, there were maybe 4-5 inches on the ground. By this morning, the weather service says we had a total of 8" of snow for a White Christmas. Made the drive to my mother's (about 100 miles) interesting on the way up. DOT had done a pretty good job cleaning the roads by our return tonight.

We got some snow about 11 PM Christmas Eve until sometime after 12 AM. Woke up to rain, got heavy during the day and then about 3PM it was snowing. So far (11 PM) it looks like about 4-5 inches of snow.

Wierd day.

No snow in south central Wisconsin. It was a "brown" Christmas. Apparently one needed to go south to see snow.

Re: White Christmas? - 12/26/02 04:46 PM

It started snowing here yesterday morning at 7:15 and continued pretty steadily until around 12:30pm. Bill and I got out to brunch at my brother's ok (10am). He continued on to his Dad's and I returned home. The worst seemed to be over but around 2pm my great niece's husband came over to pick up my brother and sister-in-law, then me, to go to dinner at my niece's. (He had the 4 wheel drive vehicle.) My son made it in last night around 9pm even though our road hadn't been plowed. Our neighboor is just now trying to move his pick up out of the way to get to his plow. Don't know what the official count was but I'd say we got at least 8 inches.

I.O. made it from Conn. to Ma. yesterday afternoon. Don't know yet whether they made it back to Conn. last night or whether he will return here today or tomorrow.

White Christmas - bah humbug - when you live 700' feet off the main road.

It started Christmas Eve and by Christmas morning we had 7 inches of snow at the Midwest Harbour Lights Museum...

It was unbelievable last night. Fierce blizzard conditions in southern Maine. Wind howling up to 50 miles per hour. Snow falling horizontally. White out conditions for hours. In the dreaded purple section of The Weather Channel's Snowfall forecast map.

We were at a friend's house for dinner when the melee started. He lives on the shore of Cape Elizabeth, a stone's throw from Portland Head Light. No matter how foggy or snowy it got, you could still see that magnificent beam of light swinging around.

This morning we found ourselves digging out from 2 feet of snow.

We left for my brothers at 3:30 Christmas Day. He lives about 10 miles awy in Sleepy Hollow, the town next to Tarrytown Light.

The rain of the morning had switched to snow at @ 2 PM. Prediction 4-6". Total by AM today: 12". Took us 90 minutes to go the ten miles home. My Mercury wagon was stuck in snowdrifts. Another road blocked by fallen tree. Luckily our two large sons were with us. We did a lot lot of pushing the car to extract it. Plowing in our towns which is usually great was non-existant. Guess those Sanitation guys didn't answer their phones or want to leave their dinners.

Finally had to leave the car 1/2 mile from home and walk the rest of the way. Our hills hadn't seen a plow. Certainly a white-out Christmas to remember in New York!

Here we spell white, "wet." We don't get white Christmases. But we did set a rainfall record today. The old record for this date (12/27) was 2.3 inches in 1890 something. The past 24 hours has given us 5.61 inches. Lots of local flooding. Fortunately we're on a mountainside, so no problems here. Have to drive through 6" of water in one spot to get to town. Won't go to town much for a couple of days (tomorrow supposed to be as bad).

Watch out back there in snow country. 5.61" of rain sounds like lots of snow.

Good old Rich, the optomist. I'm still confused as to how he can consider himself lucky living in California, land of the mud slide, on the side of a mountain where he just enjoyed a record 5.61" of rain in a 24 hour period. Maybe Gary will be there doing crazy photography and catch Rich's house (on film) as it slides by . . . . .

Lucky it wasn't snow! As I recall, they say 1" of rain equals approx 10" of snow. Might have been sometime in 2004 before we heard from Rich again if it was snow.

Some people in the Worcester, Massachusetts area were extremely pleased they got more than six inches of snow. A local electronics business (Lavines') advertises something like if you buy a television, stereo, etc, etc from us on Thanksgiving weekend, we will refund your entire purchase price if more than six inches of snow falls on Christmas Day. Needless to say, he made good on his pledge. It seems he takes out an insurance policy on everything sold that weekend.

Nice way to get people into his store for some early Christmas shopping. Especially nice for those who will be receiving refunds.

No White Christmas in Franktown, Colorado. No rain either. I think it safe to say though that we would welcome either one. We need the moisture, its been a long dry year. The mountains aka ski resorts are getting plenty, bhe we still need a good deal more to replenish the reservoirs.

Happy New Year to everyone!
