Gas price roll call

Gas price roll call - 12/13/06 03:55 PM

Alright, time to updated those gas prices! I'm heading down to Florida on Friday and I'm interested to know what type of gas prices I'll see.

I'll be going through Indianapolis IN, Lexington KY, Knoxville TN, Augusta GA, St. Augustine FL to Orlando on the way down, and up through Atlanta, Nashville, Louisville and back through Indy on the way home.

What should I expect?

My area is not on your route but the lowest price for 87 octane in my area is around $2.24 a gallon.

Unlike Bob I am on your route, Mike.. It was $2.06 at the station I fill up at on the Westside of Indy this morning... It starts dropping in price once you pass Lafayette, IN... The two gas stations at the West 10th street exit on I465 are usually about the same price.

Good news so far Paul, that's better than the $2.36 it is in most places here.

Re: Gas price roll call - 12/13/06 09:21 PM

You can expect to pay between $2.25 - $2.35 a gallon for 87 octane in the central Florida region. Those prices might flutuate a little but not by much. It also appears like BP(AMOCO) has the lowest prices in the Ocala area.

At the overpriced station downtown, it was $2.14 for regular. Strangely, it was $2.37 for mid and $2.47 for premium. Not like the usual pricing scheme of 10 cents difference.

I'm maybe starting to regret a little bit that I just closed a deal with a guy on a 1993 Range Rover...12MPG on premium. But to me, it's 100% worth it. vhappy

What! You didn't watch SOTU?

Better mileage on vehicles, greater storage space for the strategic reserve (not asking for more strategic reserve, just more storage space, I guess.) Less reliance on foreign oil, Global warming issues.

All in all, not a friendly talk for those in the gas/transportation business IMHO. I guess the reaction of that oil company was "We'll show them!"

Re: Gas price roll call - 01/25/07 05:33 AM

Tom, pretty much the same happened here, but on an even worse scale. The station that seems to be the epicenter of the local rise and fall of gas prices went from 1.83 to 2.15 with one fell swoop. Even for those greedy b******* this was a big jump. Their normal is 17 cents mid to late week to screw the people who buy their gas on their Friday payday.

Re: Gas price roll call - 01/30/07 03:42 AM

Figure it must be the cold. After the greedy dogs jumped the price 32 cents a week ago it worked its way back to 2.05 by the weekend. Then today it jumped 20 cents to 2.25. Gotta just love the way they routinely gouge and generally screw the public.

I know we have it great compared to Margret and Iris and others, but it is still irritating to see some of the oil companies and/or distributors and/or local stations just hosing people like they do.

Posted By: Dave H

Re: Gas price roll call - 04/30/07 12:06 AM

We are sitting at 2.99.9 and have been this week. Doing a check on Speedway's web site, Michigan City and Gary are a little less, but not by much.

While I do appreciate the beating that Margret takes buying gasoline, I do believe that much of the sudden increase in our US prices is the annual summer hosing of the public starting a bit early.

While I don't have an issue with capitalism and the profits it generates, I do believe the oil companies are into the obscene catagory and they don't give a rip. They know they can hose the public and get away with it. If Congress tries to legislate a penalty for the obscene profits they take then they will simply shut down production and make it worse. As much as the very thought pains and repulses me, I could probably support nationalizing the oil companies. . . . . Probably an even worse evil, but you just hate to see these companies screw the public to the level they do and get away with it, probably not even paying a proportional income tax due to all the breaks I imagine they benefit from.

The local Cumberland Farms (Gulf) surpassed the $3.00 mark for regular with a morning posting of $3.03 per gallon. By evening it actually dropped two cents to $3.01. The Sunoco station next door followed suit and matched the price for their gas.

I think the price will go below the three dollar mark after the Memorial Day weekend only to head back up before July 4th.

The major oil companies continue to price gouge and laugh as the record profits roll in. This higher oil cost is passed on to everything we need to exist. Anyone else notice that everything in the super markets has gone up?

Just gotta love the bottom feeding dirt bags that set the prices........

Re: Gas price roll call - 08/30/07 03:30 AM

It's hard to say what the price of gas is here anymore. It depends where in the area you are plus the day of the week. Discount stores are overall cheaper in my neck of the woods but if I'm 6 miles away I've seen stations with the same price or less. Then there are a couple of grocery stores that offer 10 to 20 cents off a gallon at certain stations depending on how much you spend in the store.

Bottom line is if you need gas you buy it. If you need it in the right place at the right time you pay less. The only way to really save is to drive less. Fortunately for me I don't have to commute to work anymore and I very rarely go out just to go out. I try to consolidate my stops whenever I can. I may not go anywhere for 2 or 3 days. Then when I have to shop I'll go to all the stores I can stand the same day.

Have you heard the latest, maybe preferred parking for "green" cars? Give me a break! And how many people do you know who have handicapped tags for their cars who aren't handicapped? I know walking is good exercise but don't you love going to stores when it's raining or you're just plain tired that have tons of empty handicapped spaces followed by regular spots full of empty shopping carts?

Enough ranting, here's a funny story. Years ago I went to our local Walmart when I spotted my Dad who was in his 80's leaving the store. He went to his car which he'd parked in the spot marked "Employee of the Month". I asked him why he'd parked there. He said, "Nobody ever parks there and it's a good space". laugh

I can see where one could get well cheesed off at empty shopping carts in parking spaces! That you should complain to the shop about. People are so inconsiderate and thoughtless. But the shop should collect the carts and stack them in appropriate places.

As for the handicapped spaces ... Somehow there never are any empty ones when I need one... must shop at the wrong (or right popular) stores wink ... even when on your side of the big pond! frustrated

Really sad thing is that I read an op ed piece a week or so ago that addressed the excessive price of oil right now. 87 octane is $3.03 a gallon at the cheapo stations in my area of southeastern Massachusetts. News reports predicted gas may go as high as $4.00 a gallon by mid February. That prediction was made when oil went over $100 a barrell. It has since dropped below $100 and the $4.00 a gallon talk has subsided.

I think things may change when a new President takes office a year from now. I predict a drop in oil prices at that time. Does anyone else think that may happen?

- using the car's computer to show the mpg (that shows the use in real time, so you can adjust your driving)

- and generally we try to drive as little as possible (not easy when walking is difficult!)

There goes "Concept Driving Trip in UK Next Month." I think we'll stay in London, take public transport, and get ripped off on hotels instead. ($600 a night for a Marriott. We've paid far less than that to stay at a suite at the Ritz-Carlton in the US.)

I paid $3.13.9 a gallon a week ago for premium. According to today's USA Today, we here in NJ have the cheapest gas in the nation...and we don't even pump it. laugh Pays to have something like five refineries in the state.

It said that we'll be peaking in May-June, at $3.48 national average. Then down about ten cents per month through October, culminating at $2.95 in December. And, apparently, it'll be down to $2.83 a gallon in December...2009.

I'll be saving this article, and filling in the monthly national averages that the paper reports each month. A little "experiment" on the behalf of the "speculators."

Ouch Greg, that is a lot of money for a hotel. Shame you could not find something a little smaller a bit outside the City. Bet it would have been cheaper.

Besides gas the cost of home heating oil has really escalated. When we called March 1st to inquire it was $341.9 a gallon. Thank goodness for the wood stove as we'd used less than half our supply and don't really need to buy any more oil for this season.

87 octane is averaging $3.09 - $3.15 in my area. But my fun car will be used more than my Hemi pickup (13 mpg). My new XFire (Crossfire) is great on gas. I've been averaging 24 mpg around town. Some of my fellow XFire owners told me it woul get 25-30 mpg on the highway, and 20-25 mpg around town. I thought they were kidding because the manufacturer's estimates are less mile per gallon. Needless to say I'm pleased with the mileage, but the rising price of gas really stinks! I'm happy I don't drive a diesel powered car or truck. Diesel is selling for $4.05 - $4.15 a gallon around here.

Re: Gas price roll call - 03/17/08 04:49 PM

We have a friend who has a diesel car, a Volkswagen. Even though the price of fuel is high he gets incredible mileage so he is still better off.

Then again we have neighbors who wintered in Florida with both their gas powered car, their RV and the diesel truck that hauls the RV. It will be a very costly trip for them when they return.

I can't help but shudder to think of what you'll be paying to run your boat this year Bob!

87 Octane hit a new high yesterday at the cheapo gas stations. It is now $3.40 a gallon. It was at $3.23 just a couple of days ago. Diesel was at $4.25. Big oil is killing the working man. I filled the Hemi (13 mpg) and the Crossfire (24)yesterday. I spent a total of $130. Lorna's Envoy (16 mpg) needs gas so I guess it will be a $200 week for gas.

I have been driving less and generally combine trips.

We all should have purchased "Big Oil" stock. 87 octane is now $3.62 a gallon at the cheaper stations in my area. One of the regular gas stations is now selling premium for $4 per gallon. They only have a couple of weeks to get the lower octane up to $4 by Memorial Day.

On the bright side, my new Crossfire is averaging 26.5 mpg. That's twice what I get with my Hemi Ram.

Cheer up! Buy a lottery ticket and maybe you'll win enough money to never worry about gas prices again.

Re: Gas price roll call - 05/09/08 03:42 AM

$59 to fill the Land Rover from almost empty yesterday. $3.73/gallon of 93.

The greatest thing I discovered lately was in the back of my owner's manual. Apparently, I only need 90 octane fuel to run the truck properly. So I've been trying to keep it at an average of 90, by filling with midgrade or regular as needed.

Saves me quite a bit, and it "challenges" me to lock in the "good prices," especially when I get to put in 87. The only disadvantage is when it comes to days like yesterday, where I have to put a lot of 93 in to bring the balance back up.

Also been going to the Exxon, which is down the mountain from the downtown discount station I used to go to. It's a bit less convenient, but five cents cheaper, and I get "name brand" fuel, which is a bit of a comfort. I might lose some of the savings going uphill (15% grade), but the quality is a bit more guaranteed. And, the guy who always pumps the gas for me is American, and can actually understand what I'm saying, instead of asking "premioo?" five times and then almost pressing the 87 button before I stop him. (I don't even try to do "midgrade.")

Fortunately, I don't drive that much (normally a tank every two weeks), so driving the big truck is a bit more affordable.

But still...$3.73... anger

Re: Gas price roll call - 05/09/08 11:17 AM

The biggest problem is not the cost of filling our vehicles with over-priced gas. That can be somewhat controlled by altering our driving habits and the type of vehicles we drive. The main problem is the effect of high gas/fuel prices on everything else we need to survive. Groceries have never been higher. Heating/cooling our homes has never been higher. I just don't know how young families with kids will ever be able to get ahead in this world. Then there are the seniors on fixed incomes. Who helps them?

Re: Gas price roll call - 05/09/08 01:16 PM

The smartest thing my husband and I have done is buy a hybrid. We bought it a week ago and we have averaged 49 mpg on the first tank! It is going to lower our fuel budget tremendously. My husband commutes about 50 miles each way to work...that's the price you pay for living in the country I guess. But, I drove a Dodge Ram and it was killing me to fill it up. Last week we made the decision to trade the truck for a Toyota Prius. My husband will use that for commuting and I get his Dodge Caliber. Not a bad trade. We would have loved to buy American, but there really was no competition. No American car could match the mpg of the Prius.

The car I drive is due for replacement and we are not going to entertain any car that does less than 50 mpg !! The current car (Toyota Corolla) does 42 and that's not enough.

I so which we could afford a hybrid! I'd love that!

Bob M's got the right comment here. It's not just the gas for our vehicles. A few days ago one of our local news anchors comented to the weather guy that he was tired of running his heat this time of year. Heat? What is that? I turned the thermostats down some time ago regardless of the temps. Just the other day when I was in the grocery store I noticed that some prices were double what they had been not too long ago. I can't believe that's all from higher fuel costs. I think some folks are just getting greedy. Those items sure aren't going anywhere in my basket!

Re: Gas price roll call - 05/16/08 06:45 PM

Not to derail this everlasting discussion on gas prices (don't you wish a tank of gas lasted as long??) but here is an expaination of why bread is more expensive. I remembered a similar story in our local paper that even mentioned one of the large flour manufacturers had a letter of explaination / apology on their web site, but I don't remember who the company was. Seems like it was perhaps headquartered in CT?

The abusive price of gas, allowing the extremely rich to get even richer, is causing prices of almost everything to increase because it has to be trucked somewhere along the line. I could support nationalizing the oil companies, even knowing how much the feds would screw things up.

The new car is going extremely well. I had the ECU flash tune from Germany a few weeks back. It was an amazing process to say the least. It should do 160 mph now. The car definitely performs better since the tune. Everything is optimized now. I've been averaging 24-26 mpg with the best 26.5 mpg so far. If I could keep my foot off the accelerator I could easily hit 30 mpg.

It's great to get a new sports car that's fast, stylish, and economical. Chalk it up to German engineering!

The local area cheapo stations are at $4.02 for 87 octane now. Big Oil is crushing the people of this country to fatten their wallets. Why don't the politicians do something about it? The people of America get nothing but lip service. People who are running for office are doing just that, and not paying attention to the problems in this country. If and when they get into that office, their next major concern is concentrating on getting re-elected instead of solving the real issues that face all of us each day.

People cannot afford to fuel their cars. People are loosing their jobs. The weekly pay check can no longer pay for all the essentials to survive. It's come to a point here in America that if you don't have deep pockets, you're screwed.

I think part of the gas price problem may be all of the commodity speculators and traders involved in the world markets.

Let's hope our government(us tapayer's) don't get stuck again bailing out these traders in some way when their market goes bust (like the the housing market) and have long taken their profits and jumped ship.

By the way, where's all that Iraq oil that should be helping? Let's get it pumping and into the markets!

Further, let's start getting a larger price for our food from these countries with all the oil who can't easily grow crops in the desert sand.

Re: Gas price roll call - 06/10/08 03:42 PM

Cheapo stations have surpassed the $4 mark. Most are $4.03 per gallon of 87 octane. I paid $4.22 for premium for the Crossfire yesterday. Local news states we're headed for $5.00 a gallon by July 4th. I feel that's BS to go up that much in the next three weeks, but I could be wrong. If it goes that high, many people will just stop driving except for absolute necessities. This is not a deep pocket area where I live. Most people are just fighting to survive now.

Just think if the whole nation just threw their hands in the air and curtailed their driving to about 50% of what they do now. Demand would drop off so much that a price decrease would definitely come about (IMPO).

Re: Gas price roll call - 06/10/08 04:14 PM

Re: Gas price roll call - 06/10/08 04:26 PM

The thing is, a lot of this is starting to build on speculation. Buying and selling, etc. out of fear.

But speculation usually comes in bubble form. And bubbles pop.

It's going to get to a point where the speculators realise that they aren't getting what they want out of constant trading of oil. And then the whole market is going to come crashing down. Just like the blue chips, just like housing. A lot of it is investment, and maybe even moreso than the oil companies, some traders are doing quite well on our $4/gallon petrol.

Will it go back to the $1 range? Probably never. Maybe not even the low $2s. After all, we DO have the major issue of competition in Asia for resources now.

But we could get to a point, maybe, where the seasons fluctuate around $3. That could be more bearable than what we're dealing with now.

IMHO.

Least expensive I've seen in Phoenix area is $3.09. It's a welcome relief.

I'm suspicious that the decline in oil prices, coming as it does before Presidential Election here, takes our eyes and minds off one of the 'insults' to our pocket books.

But if it does then the oil companys will be asking the government for a bail-out

One thing that "seems" odd to me is that Bush isn't getting any credit for this. He got all the blame when it was at $4 a gallon...

He should get some credit. After all it's less than two weeks to election day. wink

Of course an argument could be made that with the economy and financial mess, not many are traveling or are out of work and don't need that much gas.

After all the record profits Exxon and other gas companies have reported, tax payers will be outraged if the Senate or House even thinks about it.

I paid $2.59 for premium at the super-expensive station off the interstate, just because I needed a few gallons in a rush. But the running price for regular is fast approaching the $1 mark.

Here in WV its $2.48 today. Though its always more here, back in August I paid less out on Hatteras Island than I did at home. Airline prices are dropping too. I finally bought my tickets to Portland Oregon on election day for my February trip. Price had dropped $230 overnight so I quit shopping and bought them. Now today the rental car rates have dropped $60. If you can travel, now would be a good time.

Re: Gas price roll call - 11/16/08 03:53 AM

We were down to 1.72.9 earlier this week, then the greedy bums decided to take their normal weekend bump - they hadn't done that as much when the gas prices were so high. Back to 1.82.9 this afternoon, bet it will drop another dime or so in the next couple days. Wonder how long it will last before the greed returns?

I'm sure others have also changed their habits, trying to be smarter about their driving, planning trips around town more efficiently and such.

Re: Gas price roll call - 11/16/08 02:23 PM

Re: Gas price roll call - 11/16/08 04:47 PM

Up and down is ok if you plan ahead and don't buy on the weekends, we usually try to fill up our cars mid-week and we shop at Kroger's for our groceries which gives us an additional dime off per gallon price at the pump. Sue uses coupons and we have a Kroger shopping card which gives some more off every week, it all helps!
