If you were a new collector

If you were a new collector - 02/16/05 04:03 AM

If you were a new collector, as of February 15, 2005.
But with the knowledge you have from your previous collecting experience.
What would be the first 10 lighthouses you would buy?
And Why?

(New collectors can participate also)

Good question Daniel!! confused

I have to think about that one and can hopefully get back later. My schools of thought are spread out in too many directions. First, I would guess that it would be some of the later ones as I like the more detail; secondly, one's that I've seen. Thirdly, I lean towards the LE's still though the GLOW's have more detail for a smaller price sometimes. confused confused

I'll definitely have to get back on that one!?! wink

That's a tough question to answer in less than 2000 words. Reader's Digest version...buy the first 10 you like and don't already have in your collection. smile

Good question! I have to think on this one...I'd want to go for affordable pieces that are still good investments.

Of course, after the first 10, we all go on to buy them all! laugh

I got a spare moment and thought I would pass on a little more info on this subject.

Obviously, prices are down and most every avid collector knows how hard some of the more difficult pieces are to find at a reasonable price. If a new collector feels he or she may be in it for the long run, they should try to purchase some of the more valuable pieces like the southern belles, Coquille, Burrows, Cape Hatteras (HL102R), the four green water pieces, lightning rod pieces, etc.

Who knows what will happen to the future worth of HL's, but the pieces mentioned above will always be worth more that the everyday piece or new release you buy today.

Everyone says how there is so much more detail on the newer releases than the old pieces such as the original 17 or so. I felt that way for a while until I woke up and realized the true beauty of those original pieces and what they stand for. I guess you could compare it to the wonderful styling and innovation of today's modern automobiles. You could put 20 of today's cars in a line of traffic with one classic car from the 50's or 60's. Which vehicle do you think will draw the most attention?

 Bob

My question is designed to make you think. I also had no answer to my question as I wrote it. Maybe the better question would have been what would be your game plan. Nevertheless, this is the way I would approach a “start over collection” for me.
If I were starting a collection of Harbour Lights, I would put price ahead of most of my choices. In other wise, I would have my categories but I would let the best deal of the week dictated the order unless I saw opportunity that I feel would not happen again for a long time.
My first focus would be the 5500’s They would be Canadian or California made.
My second focus would be all the Florida lights.
My third focus would be the early 9500s
My four focuses would be my favorites that are not listed in the top categories.
My fifth focus would be the Malaysian 5500’s

With all of this in mind the first 10 I would want in are:
1. Sandy Hook
2. West Quoddy
3. Cana island
4. St Augustine
5. St Simmons
6. Jupiter
7. Sanibel
8. Key West
9. Ponce
10. Thomas point
