Nominations For Top Harbour Lights Stories of 1999

OK, we're looking for nominations for the 'Top 10' Harbour Lights stories of 1999. This isn't the poll - that will come after nominations are closed on 12/31/99.

One nomination per person, please. And 'sell' your choice. Why should it be a top story?

What's fair game for nominations? Whatever has peaked (or poked) your interests in the past 12 months. I'll reserve the right to consolidate similar nominations before the final poll.

Wow, lots of great stories come to mind. Personally I'm quite fond of the saga of BoB Younger and hope he gets a nomination.

For my own choice I'll nominate The Collapse of Secondary Market Prices and the Rise of e-Bay as a top HL story for 1999.

I'll put Bob Younger's life and death on the intenet into nomination. Proves how powerful the internet is in spreading information so rapidly. Also shows what a creative writer Tim can be. How many people were drawn into believing this story even months after the original posting?

Among the top discussions of the year has to be To GLOW or not to GLOW? This seems to bring out strong feelings from many. Probably should include the Coquille GLOW issue in here too.

Even thought I have no plans to buy one. The SOL, announcement, has to be an important event. Whether you think it's the greatest news since sliced bread, or the final sign of the "Apocalypse,"(LOL) it still has to be a Top Ten Event, for 1999!!

I think the top story should involve (1) Harbour Lights, (2) the members of this forum and how they interface with HL, (3) the story should have human interest, (4) be poignant, (5) display the best character traits of caring human beings, and (6) have a happy ending.

What could possibly be a better story, combining all of these elements, than the story of the Collector Forum members supporting (morally and financially) and rallying behind Cindy Harris (SIDD) during her recent misfortune?

How about the "mass" retirement of 12 Harbour Lights come 12/31/99? Sure there have been other reitrements of pieces before the full edition run, but never this many all at once.

Ok, I know some may reach their edition size before the 31st, but probably not too many.

This topic is directly related to another possible nomination...hint, hint (edition size)

The Bob Younger Story is without a doubt my favorite of all the HL stories from the forum this past year. Humor is the best medicine for us all and this story, with it's tongue and cheek humor, rates the best. Until we knew the origin and that Tim had been the author of this tale, everywhere I went after the story broke, my dealer, signings, HL area meetings all were a buzz with the sad news of Bob Younger and his fate. The best was the comments his brother Bill made about this environmentalist member of the YOunger family.

My choice, hands down....although the demand for the Bob Younger tree has been so great, my dealer still has not been able to get any in.

Harbour Lights lowers its edition sizes...in one case (Panama Canal) by 6,000. That's BIG.

The announcement of the year of the unexpected.

The first unexpected event of the year was the introduction of the Hillsboro Inlet with an edition size of 6,500.

The second unexpected event was the early retirement of Wind Point and Round Island.

My vote goes for the changing LE number sizes (Hillsboro, Panama Canal). The early "mass retirement" makes for questions about what is going on at the head office concerning edition sizes. Maybe 2000 will be the year for smaller editions and fewer new introductions (I hope!).

Not that I'm trying to rub it in (and please don't start your guessing again!) but -

The contest that HL initiated last year that allowed a collector to chose a light to be made is my nomination.

(For Newbies: I was fortunate to have won this award.)

Seeing that I'm broke from Christmas and don't plan on making any HL purchases in the near future - don't forget HL is having this contest again next year. So be sure to register your purchases made during Jan, Feb and March so that you too have a chance to win one of the prizes.
