I must not be as knowledgable as I thought! What is the interesting difference in this piece?
Thanks,

Rick,

Don't feel bad. I didn't know either. Never even heard of the rotated version. I'll let DANIEL explain the difference. My answer would just be an uneducated guess.

Those who have joined the CF since 1999 need to bone up on your Harbour Lights Lore.

The Rotated Top Gray's Harbor was discovered by our own Ancient Mariner, Fred Kuhlman. Fred's sharp eye noticed that something was 'different' about the Gray's Harbor he was holding at a dealer from the one he had at home.

You can read about the outcome here .

Well guys and gals, I have kept it a secret all these years. I believe the only one that I told was John prior to me having a computer. I have a Gray's Harbor S/N 0834 that has the top rotated clockwise. The door on the beacon room is lined up in a straight line over the door at the bottom of the tower. All variations that I know about and have seen posted about have the tower rotated counter-clockwise which means the beacon room door is 90 degrees counter-clockwise to the door at the bottom of the tower. My clockwise variation was found on a dealers display area in Ocala, FL.

It may be the only one in existence as far as I have been able to find out. Anybody want to trade for a "green Water" Michigan City? Of course you know I'm only kidding on that trade. I would have to trade for something like a Split Rock MI or Burrows Island OR at the minimum.

Does anybody else have a Gray's Harbor with a clockwise rotation?

Wonder if any of the bidders besides Frank knew that it was an error piece?

I all ready have one.

The story goes like this.
The top had a keyway formed into it that would line it up with a slot that was in the lighthouse. This was so the top would be placed in the proper position.
To speed things up one or more of the employees filed down the keyway. Probably everything was going smoothly until the employees were called away or replaced. The person or persons who took over had no idea of how it was to line up and there was no keyway to guide them.

At the time it was not very difficult to find one with a rotated top. I was able to locate three at dealers in Florida and Paul Bradey was also able to locate three at dealers.
But there was more to it then being rotated. Because of the position of the door on the top piece there was a possibility of a total of 6 variations. I believe all six positions were never found and as Rich said most of them rotated the same way.

Jim Rutherford announced in his news letter at the time that there could be as many of 400 of these variations.
