Eatons Neck Lighthouse - 04/28/99 06:40 PM

Hello Fellow Lighthouse Buffs!

I wish to share a wonderful experience. Today I visited the lighthouse here at Eatons Neck on Long Island. I have been there a few times and today I was able to climb the tower with an escort from the U.S. Coast Guard. They were very friendly and accomodating. I asked the officer who escorted me if they would do this for the rest of my family someday, or to other visitors and he told me that it would be no problem.

If you live on Long Island or are visiting, Eatons Neck is worth the trip. The view from the top and the fresnel lens are fantastic.

Hi Mike,
Just saw your post on Eaton's Neck. We were out there on March 29. Climbed the tower (with coast guard escort), loved seeing the fresnal lens in place. I called ahead for appt./permission to visit. They want people to do that as they have alot of school, scout, lighthouse tour groups visiting. In fact, Eaton's neck is the lighthouse i keep recommending to HL. to
produce.
Also saw Fire island and climbed it. Our tour guide was Tony. Our family thought it was the best tour we been to and we have visited over 20 lighthouses. Third visit that day was Old Field Pt.
Still many other lightd we want to visit on Long island.

How are you doin' Dedo??

Happy to hear that you visited Eatons Neck!!

It's a great view from the top!

Isn't Fire Island fantastic!! I know Tony very well. As of this year I'm a member of the preservation society and also a volunteer at the lighthouse. One day a month on weekends I help out with tower tours. I really hope that you'll come back and perhaps I'll be there so we can meet and talk lighthouses.

The best to you and yours!!!

Hi to both of you NY collectors,

Would it be possible to have a Long Island tour sometime if I came up to visit? Have been out to Fire Island, but inside and have seen Jeffrey Hook. I have limited my collection and New York lights are in and therefore, I must see them.

DeDo we chatted and emailed last week about your finding Cape Canaveral. Did you find one?

Derith & Mike,

I like Derith's idea of a tour of Long Island Lights. Maybe several Harbour Lights collectors would be interested in meeting out there and see the lighthouses as a group. It would be nice to meet some more of the HL Family of collectors.

Count us in Ron. Gloria and I would love to see all the Long Island Lights, including the off shore ones. This type of trip is on the agenda for us in the next couple of years.

So, troops, when are we going? I am always ready to travel. I would need some prior planning as I am in FL and would have to fly there. Islip out on Long Island is a good airport for SWA to fly into. Just let me know.

I'd be interested too. I'm originally from New York, but a Floridian now. Fire Island is my favorite HL piece, and I'd love to see the real thing. Maybe a mini reunion?

Re: Eatons Neck Lighthouse - 05/03/99 04:03 AM

Hi,
Just got back to this thread. I would love to see the other Long Island lights. The only ones we have visited are the three I mentioned a couple of days ago. I think a trip out to the eastern end would be great. There area lot of off-shore lights arond LI.It would be great if some of us could get together to tour the lights.
Derith, I finally found Cape Canaveral thru R@R for my husbands B'Day today.
I ordered it last Tues. It is on its way from FL. I printed out the HL picture of it which I placed in his card.
A lot of forum people were very helpful in trying to help me locate this gift. It was my 1st request from R@R. The lead was just difficult to reach. But I did it. Thank you everyone.

WOW!!!

It's great to hear from all you folks interested in the lights here on Long Island.

A get together and lighthouse tour sounds like a fantastic idea. I've seen them all except for Coney Island. It would be a 2 to 3 day affair depending on the time fo year, the East End gets a liitle crowded late summer, early fall. There are 4 lights that can be toured and climbed, Montauk, Fire Is., Horton Point, and Eatons Neck. There are also several lights offshore that are fine to view (Execution Rock, "Bug" Light, The "Coffee Pot"(Orient Point), Plum Is.and Middleground (which you can see from the grounds of Old Field Light).
Keep in touch. I'd love to join you all but if I can't I'd be happy to map out where they are to help you on your journey.

Re: Eatons Neck Lighthouse - 05/03/99 02:09 PM

Here some more info. There's an organization in Greenport - probally the Greenport Historical Society - that run a lighthouse tour by ferry for about 300 people each year in June. I found out about it in March and it was already sold out!!! I asked about a flyer so I could plan to go next year but they never sent me one. I also asked to get on their mailing list but who knows. I guess the best way to get on is to join the Society.

I guess the trip probally does LI Sound both sides LI, Conn, Block Island???

Anyone know about or been on this trip?

It sounds like there is a lot of interest in seeing the lights on Long Island. Since there is so much to see, and with the museum coming to New York, and the fact that there may be a place large enough to have a reunion, and the millenium coming, and the Statue of Liberty not that far away, maybe Harbour Lights could plan a gathering for all of us out there, say in 2001.

The Chesapeake Chapter of the USLHS is planning a fall trip that sounds wonderful. Perhaps some could add on once the group is in (or is it on?) Long Island.

Here's the link

Wish I could make this trip, but not this year.

To Dave H,

I checked out the trip on the Chesapeake web site a couple of days ago. Boy, sounds great!! I wish I could make as well. I've seen most of the lights on the trip but from the beach. I would love to see them all by boat!

Hi All you Long Island Light Lovers,

Just back to this thread today and enjoyed reading all the replies. I found the Chesapeake tour interesting but am at a Methodist conference that weekend. It would be nice is HL could get a tour up, 2001 sounds fine, but I will probably be there on my own before then.

If any of you make plans let me know. I really do enjoy lighthousing trips. Last one out ot Egmont Key here in Tampa Bay area. By the by, Joanne, where are you living in FL?

It is interesting hearing from all you Long Island lights lovers. Keep replying.

Wow, all this interest in the lights of Long Island. You folks could help make my job a bit easier by bugging publishers for a LI lighthouse book. :-)

There are a few ways to go about seeing Long Island's lights...

1. You could freelance it. That's the way with the most freedom, but if you don't know the roads or the history of the lights, you might not enjoy it as much.

2. You could contact Lighthouse Safaris at www.lighthousesafaris.com and get on one of Gayle's trips. The prices are reasonable and the service is excellent. The dates are also on my site.

3. You could take one of the cruises listed on my site. While the June 5 East End Seaport cruise is sold out (and maybe for next year, too), there's a cruise on July 31. Also, there are cruises out of Waterford, CT (www.sunbeamfleet.com)that visit several offshore lights (Plum Island, Orient Point, Little Gull, Race Rock)

4. A bunch of folks could meet somewhere on LI and do an impromptu tour. I have plenty of info on the island's lights and would be happy to offer my services for a day or two. It'd be a nice Fall trip. I'm doing a presentation at the Ponce Inlet, FL museum on July 10 and would be happy to give that same sort of presentation in conjunction with a tour on LI if a group wanted to get together. Who has a slide projector?

Thanks for the interest in Long Island's lights. Now, I really should try ot get some work done tonight...

Re: Eatons Neck Lighthouse - 06/11/99 12:16 AM

If the weather is nice this Sunday (June 13) I'm going to the Eaton's Neck light to take slide photos. I already called the CG and made sure it was okay. If anyone would like to join me, just send me an e-mail and we'll hook up.

Re: Eatons Neck Lighthouse - 06/11/99 12:31 PM

Hi Bob,

I was at Eatons Neck yesterday. Had a little "slack time" at work so I made the trip.

Couldn't do do a tower climb, they had a school trip there so I just walked around for a few minutes and used the binoculars.

Weather is supposed to be great Sunday, would love to hook up with you but we are busy on the home front prepairing for my sons high school graduation.

Maybe I will catch up with you on another trip.

I was looking for some info on Jeffrey's Hook, and ran into this 'golden oldie' when a lot of us were just connecting for the first time.

Good one Bob, nice to read some of the old stuff, especially when it features the Stooges!

Can't wait for December to come. (Did I really say that?) Well the book to come! smile

Too bad the regional comes before the book.
