Dyce (or Dice) Head Light - 06/26/01 02:06 PM

My wife and I will be in Castine, ME for a kayaking symposium in mid July and we plan to visit the lighthouse there. From what I've read, there are 2 lights there, an earlier rubblestone tower, and a newer skeleton tower. My questions for the forum are:
1) Are there actually 2 towers?
2) How close are they to each other?
3) Which is the correct spelling, Dice or Dyce?

Anytime one is looking for information on a lighthouse - or a photo of it - there is a great resource on the Harbour Lights site:
The Internet Index of Lighthouse Links

In the left menu, click on the State-By-State, then click on the state you want to see. In the main window, scroll down to find your lighthouse.

"Dice" appears to be the correct spelling; there is no information on an older lighthouse nearby.

After reading your post I checked my library to make sure of some point and here is the results.Dice head light, castine Me..originally built 1829 rebuilt in1858 keepers house rebuilt 1937,it is no longer a functioning light the keepers house is owned by the town of Castine which rents it out with icome used for maintainance of the light and keepers house. The active light is on a skeleton tower built at the waters edge.It is easily reached from the town of Castine.Hope this helps you good lighthousing.Bill O'Brien

When we were there a few years ago, the old rubblestone light tower and adjacent keepers house (which has since had a fire and I believe is being repaired) was easy to find and view. I didn't look for the skeleton tower so don't know whether you can see it or not. I believe Dyce was the old original spelling and it got corrupted to Dice over the years. Hope you enjoy it!
