Esopus Meadows, NY - 04/04/99 02:07 PM

I would like to find directions to see Esopus Meadows lighthouse.
On a recent trip to Syracuse, I was able to see several Hudson River lighthouses. My guidebook, "American Lighthouses" says Esopus Meadows is visible from several points along Route 9 on the east side of the river. I was not able to spot the lighthouse from Route 9 or from the places I tried turning off the road to get closer to the river.
I am guessing you have to turn off of Route 9 and that it is a matter of knowing just where to do that.
TIA

Maybe this will help you find the lighthouse.

Using Paul's link, it references River Road off of Rt.9 at Ulster Park. Following River Road East(north) you will also come to a very small park right off the road along the water's edge called "Lighthouse Park". If you pull off at the park, you are exactly parallel with the light, and a nice unobstructed view too.

If you check out the HL Gallery Pages, it includes a shot I took from that exact point in the morning with a 205mm zoom.

I wanted to thank Paul & Rod for this info from last year. I had to travel up to our weekend place in the Catskill Mountains today. Decided last night I would incorporate a side trip to the only Hudson River lighthouse that I haven't seen.

My lighthouse books were of no help for directions so I did a search & came up with this thread.

The scenic Hudson River link was great. In fact I placed it in my favorites. Saw & photograped Esopus Meadows from lighthouse park & the nature preserve. The travel directions were detailed.

Now all I have to do is get a chance to see it up close & personal.

Really enjoyed Rod's great early AM photo.

Nice photo Rod!! Just for your information, the little island just to the left of the lighthouse is where the original lighthouse stood (1839-1872).

Frank, you can also view Esopus Meadows from the East side of the Hudson. You have to go to the Mills Mansion which is located in Staatsburg. The lawn of the mansion slopes down towards the river.
