Long and Winding Road to Alpena Part I

Day Four: Waterfalls, Ligthouse & Leaves!!

First stop of the day Sable Falls...

The book says 1/4 mile trip to the falls... they didn't say 1/4 of a mile down steps then 1/4 of a mile up steps, but well worth the trip as you can see..

Next up, the 1 1/2 mile walk out to the Au Sable Light...

The sun was out when we started but..

As we saw the 'light' at the end of the tunnel, finally...

It became completely overcast and the black flies were biting so we didn't stay at the light long..

On the way back to the car I found this little guy and...

What a difference from ground level or his eye level..

And of course on the long walk back, the sun came back out...

Then as we were driving to our hotel the cloud cover came back, but the colors still came through..

Especially this group..

Guess who was guarding the entrance of our hotel..

Neat pictures! The waterfalls in the fall are amazing...makes me want to head leaf-peeping.

And...WHAT IS IT with big moose on the forums? wink

Spectacular photos. Strange to see the trees turning--it's just beginning here in the NW hills of CT. My favorite time of the year.

See that you made the long walk out to Au Sable. Did get some pretty color pics for the effort.

Yes, Dave, we made the trek back to the Au Sable. Even though they post it at 1 1/2 miles Sue thinks it is more like 2 miles and they just posted the shorter distance to encourage you to walk back there.. I know it does take a while..

We'll see you Thursday in Alpena, Dave...

Paul

Were the waterfalls you took pictures of on the way to Alpena??

Bert, they are on the very indirect route to Alpena. They are on the UP (Upper Peninsula) in the area between Munising and Grand Marais, MI. Generally in the area of Picture Rocks National Lakeshore. Remember that Paul took the scenic, leaf peeping roound about route . . . . So, they are on the way to Alpena, just depends on where you're coming from.

Day Five: Leaves, Lighthouse and Waterfall, oh yea Rain!!

Where we are going on highway 123...

Where we have been on highway 123...

County road 500 headin back to Crisp Point after years of trying..

After 9 miles it gets narrower and narrower, but it has been much improved..

Since we only met one car going the other way it wasn't a problem getting out to shoot this image and leave the car in the road..

As you may have noticed as we drove back what little sun we had went away as we approached the light..

Re: Long and Winding Road to Alpena Part II... - 10/04/05 11:30 PM

After a couple of quick images and some black flies, we got back in the car and started our trip back out to pavement..

I shot a couple of photos before the deluge came-- and I was busy keeping the car on the suddenly very slick creek (road)... The sides of the road, being higher than the road itself, turn the road into a creek in places..

Finally back on 123's wet pavement..

The rain turned to sprinkles for a while so we made a quick stop at the Upper Tahquamenon Falls... The falls are one of the largest east of the Mississippi..

While they are large, I like the Sable Falls from the day before better..

We barely made it back to the car before it started pouring once again and we headed to our hotel..

We had a rainy day today but this is only the second day of rain in the last 20 days of lighthousing this Summer and fall, pretty good record for great weather..

Awesome pictures! I really miss the changing leaves. Not too much around here in Florida, not nearly as spectacular as the northern trees anyway.

The leaf images today were with overcast and rainy conditions, they would be even more spectacular if the sun was out..

Day Six: Sunrise

I thought I would give you a taste of what we woke up to this morning.. It is really great when you can just walk out on your balcony and get an image like this of dawn breaking..

About 15 minutes later, a great way to start the day!

Day six Continued in.. Long and winding Road to Alpena Part III

Just beautiful Paul. It's amazing how quick the leaves change from being on those same roads just one month ago.

This is the weekend that Matt and I have gone up to the UP for the last three years - we have a wedding anniversary on 10/11 and I love getting the colors at their peak. GORGEOUS SHOTS!!! I can't believe the flies are still torturing the Lake Superior shoreline..ICK! Thanks for taking me along, Paul.
