Shoal Island (NY) Lighthouse

Shoal Island (NY) Lighthouse - 09/27/05 02:04 PM

Good Morning ...

If anyone would have specific directions to this lighthouse in upstate NY it would be appreciated.

The one website I found noted it took three hours of wandering to find the correct camping trail to get the view seen in the picture ... something a little more specific would help.

Thanks in advance,

Barry

Hey Barry!

Try Lighthouse Depot site. Their information on this light is more detailed.

Sandy, I think it's Shoal Point that Barry's looking to find.

Barry did you try emailing the webmaster of that site for directions? You have to "return to port" a bunch of times but you'll get to a page with an email button after a while.

I'd be interested in knowing the directions too, for sometime when I'm up that-a-way.

You must be looking for East Charity Shoals Light on Lake Ontario.

Mike,

Thanks for your interest ... your map coincides with what I was able to find today ...

So, tomorrow looks like this ... Brewerton, whatever is visible of Frenchman's Island, Sylvan (or Verona) Beach, then Up to Shoal Point, then down to the marina light in Cooperstown ... phew ... and of course, it is suppose to rain steadily all day ...

And I repeat ... Big Moose Drive?

Barry, just watch out for the big moose - you don't want to upset him (or her).

Well it started out pretty rainy and windy this morning but now it's not bad. Sun's out so hopefully Barry hasn't gotten too wet. Dave, it's the bears you have to watch out for near Big Moose! Going to the dump to see foraging bears used to be a popular pastime, until they gated the entrance. Besides drinking there isn't a whole lot to do up in those woods!

Dave & Sue,
You're not kidding! I rented a log cabin up on Artist Lake - upstate NY by Lake George. It was so pretty and peaceful the first day that we were trying to figure how to buy one. The after supper event was going to the dump to watch the bears. One morning while driving down Main Street, a Moose jumped out from under a small bridge and galloped across the road, almost totalling my Suburban. No vcr, one tv station - by the end of the week, my kids were standing on a surfboard in the middle of the Lake. Cabin fever. eek

Good News ... Bad News

The Good News ...

... I actually found Big Moose Road ... it is right near Big Moose Lake ... Big Moose Pond ... and Big Moose River ...

The Bad News ...

... the lighthouse wasn't located there ...

I'll post more later, but essentially, not being the outdoors type, I didn't understand the directons. "Cold Camp" was the name of an area. It took a local realty person to get me on the right track.

Then Yogi took over ... travelling down a gravel road, Yogi's advice was "if you come to a fork in the road, take it" I was confronted by a fork with three options. I could see water so even if I chose unwisely I wouldn't stray too far. I found it on the second stab, about two-thirds visible from the small dock pushing into Fourth Lake.

I'll see a little later this morning what some of the pictures look like.

Two images from Thursday ...

"Why did the turkeys cross the road ..."

And this is Shoal Island ... it is dark becasue it was still terrible weather outside and there wasn't much I could do with it ... I stepped out onto the dock and leaned as far as I could ...

I endured blinding rain and winds gusting in excess of 50 mph. It was penance in order to have the wonderful weather we would have in Maine Saturday.

Here's the first one posted from there ... Saddleback Ledge ...certainly the starkest, most desolate light I've personally seen.

Although the weather was bad, the picture came out very good. I enjoy seeing pictures in different weather. Makes things interesting.

Yes Barry it is a pretty neat picture. Too bad the weather wasn't nicer for you. Did you know that Big Moose Lake was the setting for the book American Tragedy, the place where Chester Gillette knocked off his pregnant girl friend?

(All that talk about moose and bears and we got turkeys! smile )

Did you do the Oneida Lake lights and Cooperstown?

Too bad the trees got in the way. frown I really think trees should be trimmed or cut down that close to a lighthouse. Any way both pictures are good. smile
