A Long Drive South

A Long Drive South - 11/27/01 12:42 AM

Being one who doesn't like to sit around for very long especially around the holidays, I decided last minute to head south to Georgia to spend the week of Thanksgiving with my family in Augusta. However, I made my first stop in Baltimore since I had plans to work with the Chesapeake Chapter of the USLHS.
So, the Saturday before Thanksgiving my best friend Shannon and I spent a good part of our day helping out the Chesapeake group's efforts in maintaining the lightship in the Baltimore Harbor. Most of our time was spent polishing brass in the watch room.

Others worked on stencling and adding a new plexi-glass door in the cabin area. Other photos are at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1787893&a=14035623

On Sunday, I headed south towards Georgia but...I had to stop in NC first. I'd never seen any of the Outer Banks lights so it was a must.
I stopped at Currituck...

...Bodie Island...

...and Hatteras...

...before heading to Georgia. What a long day that was! I left MD by 6:30 AM and arrived in Augusta, GA around 11:30 PM. See http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1787893&a=14029019 for more pictures from the trip.

Finally, after resting a few days, my nephew Nick and I headed to Tybee Island Light in Savannah.

This was his first lighthouse and everyone there knew it. He wasn't shy about sharing that fact at all. More at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1787893&a=13847704 We also visited Ft. Pulaski from which the Cockspur Island lighthouse can be seen off in the distance.

Thanksgiving finally came and my family enjoyed the time together. Friday night was family portrait night and then Saturday I made the entire 15 hour drive from GA to NY.
And it was well worth the drive after a great week with family and lighthouses.

Sounds like you had a great trip, Shirin. You certainly got in some lighthousing on the way to the folks house! Nice time of year, with the crowds being absent, the downside being sometimes the lights / museum are closed. Looks like you had some very pretty days for pictures. (check the first and third links, though - they don't seem to work.)

Sounds like you got Nick off to a good start for his lighthousing career. Tybe is a wonderful light to start with! I bet he will be looking forward to future adventures with his favorite aunt.

Thanks for letting me know the links didn't work Dave. They're fixed now. Just an extra period at the end of each link.

As for Nick, I talked to him this evening and he is still going on and on about the Tybee Light trip we had. He has no idea how happy he made me! Now I just have to send him copies of his pictures.

Shirin, I know you had a great time and the way you feel about lighthousing I'm sure your nephew will quickly follow in your footsteps. It's funny how our paths follow each other. We are planning to visit Tybee in January.

Take care and thanks for the great pictures.

Shirin, these are nice photos. I like the one of Nick on his first climb and I think you should send it in for NELL to put in the Beacon along with his story (and yours) of your trip.

How about sending it to Tim Harrison and Lighthouse Digest. It's great that you inspired him to climb and even greater that you captured the moment. Both of you will treasure this for many years to come.

In fact, I think that these Collector Forums should have a forum devoted to "First Time at the Top", where people can post pictures of others on their first climb.

Thanks for sharing these photos with all of us.

What a smile on Nick when he was at the top of the tower! I think you have him hooked on lighthouses, Shirin.

Nick is definitely hooked! According to my sister he is still talking about our trip. If only Georgia was closer to NY, I'd have a buddy to with me on my lighthouse adventures.
I'm just waiting to see what kind of pictures he took. I think it will be interesting to see what he thought was photo worthy at the lighthouse and the Forts we visited.
Great ideas Ron. I'll start working on the story very soon.
